How much flattening is ok?

Recommended Posts

Keep Shooting!!!

Just for giggles I loaded the same ten rounds over 10 times before any signs of loose primer pockets FWIW

124 PD/MG, 6.8WAC, FED SRP, or WIN SPP, 1.165/70 depending on bullet.

To me, the flattening is very small. How much is acceptable?

Good to go.

How does the AA7 compare to other powders you’ve used?

Tim

I've been using 124 gr PD JHP w/7.0 gr WAC.

When I first started shooting open I couldn't feel a difference between any powder I tired. Now I can tell a difference between the WAC load and this load. I don't feel it's very significant but the 115/AA7 is flatter.  I don't really care though, I can shoot about as fast as I can pull the trigger (.13’s) with the WAC load and still put them in a softball sized group at 10yds.

I don't care what the dot does or far it goes up. I just pull the trigger when it's where it needs to be.

I'll probably end up with AA7/115 cause I think it's cheaper.

I've tried all the other major powders, but I can't tell much difference since they all fall in between WAC and AA7. When the buzzer goes off, they all feel the same.

Glad I found this thread. I just got my gun and was wondering the same thing. I think mind look a little less flat then yours? But I think you’re g2g. I’ve seen way worse when I was using soft fed small pistol match primers. They’re super soft. Here’s what mine looked like with 8g hs6, 124g jhp 1.170. Fed SRP. still pretty soft primers. Just loaded some up with win SRP to see how those look.

Here is another one I like to keep for reference. It's not just Open guns that can produce flat primers. I picked this up at a Production/Single stack only match. Fired from an M&P.

Definitely got something going there if that supposed to be minor pf loaded ammo.

Yep, somebody once told me they had seen more guns blown up in minor PF than they did MAJOR because of heavy bullets and very small charges. Often of the wrong powder.

When I was shooting Production I dabbled in 147's with N310 and it was flattening primers a little.

I don't have any pics of the cases, but I swear I've seen similar flattening to the OP's picture with some factory loads shot through ordinary guns.  The one that comes to mind is Hornady Critical Duty 135 gr.  (Not even the +P, just the standard pressure stuff.)  I'd be reluctant to push the OP's load much higher, but as somebody else in the thread said, the OP is already making Major with a significant cushion, so unless he dislikes what his dot is doing, there's no reason to go farther, and maybe even some reason to back off a little.
