Gomar83
I am thinking about buying a Smith 625JM and was wondering what possible upgrades you all would recommend?
BHBret
Me, too! I just put a Hogue X-Frame grip on mine. I also just ordered the Miculek spring kit from Brownells. Looking forward to seeing what others say. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Gomar83
What was your thoughts on the stock Miculek grip?
BHBret
I have big hands and the Miculek felt a little small and slippery. I’m used to the X-Frame grips since I took them off of a 329PD that usually wears Crimson Trace grips. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
PatJones
What was your thoughts on the stock Miculek grip?I have the Miculek grips on both my 625 and 627. I dislike finger grooves, palm swells and rubber grips.
Gomar83
Is there a noticeable difference in felt recoil between the hogue and the Miculek?
BHBret
I never shot it with the Miculek. Hogue grips fit me well. Glock ginger grooves are too small so when Gen 5 came out I jumped in and bought two of them so far. So, for me, Glock no grooves but Smiths I go groovy with Hogue. minnesota1
Just get the standard 625 as either way you will need an action job on either one so save yourself money and just get the standard 625. Use the money saved for your extras.
Gomar83
If memory serves correctly the 625JM is cheaper then the 625PC. I got a quote the other day on a 625JM for just under $800 out the door.
alecmc
I'd upgrade the 625 by not buying it and buying a 627 or 929 instead
Gomar83
Ideally I would rather have a 610, but that is a fair amount more then what I have available at this moment.

What's the intended purpose for the 625 ? Range toy and plinking, or is the plan to start using it in competition ? If you plan on using it in competition, the 625, and even the 610 really dont have good use. The 8 shot guns are king. The only time a 6 shooter is needed is if you are participating in ICORE classic division or IDPA
BHBret
I’m going to use mine mainly for IDPA. Was using a 329 but speedloaders caused me issues. Hoping to use it at the Iowa State championship this summer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Gomar83
The intended purpose at this time would be for at home on the range, plinking, and to help teach my son and get him into the sport. That and I already load .45acp and .40, so I wanna stick with what I’m already loading.
AzShooter
I'd put an Apex Hammer and Extended Firing Pin in it. You should be able to tune the action down to about 6 pounds at least. Definitely have the chambers chamfered. Nothing reloads faster than the 625. Shoot Round Nose bullets. 230 grains are the best. If you want to shoot ICORE down load them to abut 3 - 3.2 grains of Bullseye.
MWP
If you haven’t bought one yet, go and try one. Borrow one, steal one, whatever you have to do. They give a pretty stiff kick to be honest. Not something I would try to teach anyone on. But for IDPA it’s a great choice.

The S&W X-Frame grips help with the recoil but smaller hands don't work well with that grip.
Gomar83
I have a several more questions: who do you guys recommend to cut the cylinder for moon clips, what brand and thickness of moons, and how light can you load the .45’s?
BHBret
The 625JM is ready for moonclips as is and even comes with four in the box. I got 50 moonclips from UniqueTek for $20. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

How light, as in bullet weight or charge weight? Since you don't have to cycle a slide, you can load 45's to be pretty soft shooting.
Gomar83
I’m trying to remember if it was a 625 pc or a 625 jm that I looked at in a indoor range recently that wasn’t cut for moon clips. I apologize for my poor memory.
Gomar83
Right now I have a fair amount of 200 gr SWS’s and wasn’t sure which powder to try first for softer recoil.
AzShooter
For the pistol work I'd go with TKCustom.com. Tom does excellent work and he has the moonclips you need for your gun.
