KS Concealed Carry Process

It's been an interesting experience, relocating to Kansas from Richmond, VA.  A healthy amount of that 'interesting' has resulted from encounters with KS public services.  I recently completed the process of obtaining a concealed carry permit here, and while KS is a shall issue state, there was an amazing abundance of 'interesting'.

Let's walk through the process:

Step 1 - Complete a mandatory 8 or 9 hour class on handgun proficiency and laws, then pass the shooting qualifier and a written exam (that literally no one was allowed to fail).  Cost $99 and a whole Saturday learning where the trigger was.  Do your best to not call out the instructor when his claims of speed and accuracy, drawing a stock Glock from concealment, would make him a GM in Open.  Also, try to not poke fun at the convoluted process, when he explains it (I failed at that one).

Step 2 - Have a passport photo taken.  Cost $5

Step 3 - Complete application, affix passport photo, and write two different checks, totaling $132.50.

Step 4 - Submit application, checks, and your cert of completion from the class to the local sheriff's office.  Get fingerprinted.

Step 5 - Wait (in my case, it was two months to the day) for your notification of approval to arrive in the mail.

Step 6 - Take notice of approval to local drivers license center and have your picture taken and receive a temporary permit (that looks like a bar bill).  Try to not wonder where the passport photo you submitted went.  Cost $16

Step 7 - Wait for your final final permit to arrive in the mail.

In total, it's a 2.5 month process, at best, with a cost of $252, plus time and fuel.  Oh, and you have to renew every 4 years.

PA and VA were both one stop at the sheriff's office, with your application and a check for $35, get printed, and wait around 2 weeks for your permit, that was good for 5 years.
