i managed to grap a long comp

yay now i can do a short comp vs long comp vs custom extra long comp video comparison

How do you like the short comp? that’s what I chose. I’ve tried lots of different  muzzle brakes for  rifles before and found that I can’t really tell the difference between 75% and 60% recoil reduction. Granted it’s only $10 difference between the long and short but on rifles I get similar results on a $50 brake compared to a $175 brake.  I just went with shorter this go round. Let me know your results.

i mean the short brake works well. i have an extra long 3 port brake that works better but i agree that once you get to 70% or more reduction you dont really notice any difference.  ill do a video with shots from all of them soon so everyone can see whats better if there is one thats better at all

I went with the short brake......drilled a few 3/8" holes in the top and milled one of those angled side ports out to be more straight. Yeah, the porting in the barrel works too. It shoots stupid flat.

Does there ever come a point that you can over port? Or any concerns of birdshot catching the holes in the barrel and causing trouble? Not criticizing, just thinking out loud. I’m all for modding everything to no end as well... do all my own work since my last smith forgot to open the end of a brake on my 300 winmag. But brakes/comps/porting on shotguns still kind of baffles me. It’s not like a tight fitting bullet going through a rifled barrel minus the grooves and lands. And besides slugs, it’s just lots of little balls floating around randomly. But yes, we know they work. Did you do a before after vid with the barrel porting and then the comp? Would love to see the stacked effect of each adding more and more reduction. Or did you happen to chrono a slug before and after any of this?  Are you the one who powered the side of the barrel as well?

what did you drill with?

also im curious to know how you sanded down the barrel holes so that stray bits of metal wouldnt get stuck and interfere with the shell as it travels down the barrel?

Finally got a chance to go run mine again.   It is fixed now and will eat a few different brands in the 1235 to 1250 fps range.   When I say fixed, this is what I mean.  A couple pages back, I describe how my VR would only cycle on high velocity  (1350 and up).  I noticed that the bolt got really stiff at the last third of travel.   My buffer tube was screwed all the way in and I think the spring was binding up before the bolt completely cycled.   I took about 4 turns out on the buffer tube and now the bolt cycles smoothly.  Still plenty of buffer tube threads engaged as well.   Plus, when I got home from shooting there were two 19 rounders waiting for me!  Loving this setup.   The 510c is great on a shotgun!  The dot/ring reticle works well.

Also tried out the slugs I use for the M3K.  It shot them well so I sighted it in to use them.   The last two slug shots at 30 yards crushed the dot and then a birdshot from 20 yards aimed at the same dot wiped it out.   That'll work!

Had a 3 gun march today. The gun kinda struggled. The promag drum consistently jammed unfortunately. The 19 rounder did better and the 9’s did well.  Considering sending the drum back.

Beyond that, I really need to practice with slugs with the gun. Couldn’t hit gongs at 60-80 yards while standing...at all. Likely a practice issue. And the trigger pull caused some headache too.

Was running with the IC choke. Will be changing to the modified as I had trouble with a spinner and getting a stiff steel popper to fall.

I had similar problems at BGSL today. Some were self inflicted-don't try to shoot slugs off hand with the 20 round drum in (too heavy).  My bolt wouldn't go back as far with the Taccom buffer as the factory. I had several instances of partial feed yesterday.  I re-installed the factory buffer today and it is back to running smoothly. Mod was perfect for everything at this match.

I'd like to keep the fluted cover when I get a muzzle brake. I wonder if I could cut it back and use it as the lock nut?

Locking back shouldn't matter based on buffer, it stops on the catch. Talk to Tim @ Taccom about the buffer though since the gun should definitely run better with it. You may need to back the buffer tube out a full turn

Yes you can trim the shroud and use that as the handguard retainer like it is now. Others have already

Which end of the shroud is threaded? The gas block end or the muzzle end? I was hoping that you could cut the shroud and still use it with the comp but it didn’t look that way from pics I saw. My vr is still sitting at the shop since they don’t do transfers on the weekend. Ugh!
