Charging smell issue

Recommended Posts

You dont smell it while firing due to powder burn. But racking the rifle cold there is a strong hot/burning metal smell from the buffer tube and also from the charging handle. It is a foxtrot mike upper with forward charging handle. After i first noticed it i lubed all surfaces, did i not lube enough?

I get that too sometimes.  Haven't noticed any issue with performance/shooting.  The rear of the receiver is also where shooters often get a lot of gas in the face when shooting suppressed, so it may just be some fumes from standing lubricants or whatever escaping.

I got that too, when all the parts were new. But I think it has dissipated since running a couple thousand rounds through. Just got a new bolt carrier and the smell has returned. Never got that with my rifle caliber ARs. I thought it was rather odd. Not too concerned about it though.
