k03s
Hello there, I got a recommendation for an .38 spl wadcutter load; 148 grs. HB-WC copperplated, Fed 100 primer, Overall length 30,2 mm. And 4,2 grs. of Hodgdon HP38.... Isn’t 4,2 not way to much for a 148 HBWC? This is the first time for me using the HP38 powder, so i’m not familiar with it’s characteristics. Load is supposed to be a highspeed, very accurate load. will be fired from a 6” Smith 686. Thanks in advance! Edited September 17, 2018 by k03s
Mcfoto
According to the Hodgedon site, max for a lead 148 gr bullet is 4.0 so might be a little hot. I’m loading 3.7 gr for a 147 gr. coated bullet. The coated manufacturers recommend using lead data, Not sure what a copper plated would be. Hi-Power Jack
I may be wrong, but usually load c. 3 gr Bullseye for a soft target load, and HP38 (W231) isn't that much slower. I'd also guess that 4.2 gr would be "high speed". I'd start at 3.0 and work up, slowly, with a chrono
AHI
3.2 of 231/HP38 = 2.8 of Bullseye Much more of ether will " blow the skirt " off a HBWC. Have shot /loaded 10s of thousands of these. IN NRA "Bullseye competition .

Blowing skirts off the HBWC is not a myth. Those tiny holes in your target came from somewhere. For a solid DEWC I load 4 grains Win 231, but that is not a soft shooting target load. It makes about 130 PF from my 686. I think it’s too hot to shoot regularly in a K-frame.
