Shadow2 Open project

I shot 200 rounds at a practice session today and I am more and more impressed with the gun, not a single hiccup except for the occasional trigger finger freeze from the cold weather. The RTS2 sight with its big window is great, very easy to pick up and track the dot compared to the smaller sight I had on it before.

A friend has picked up 4kg of 3n38 powder for me today so I will start testing out a good load this week. I hope I can get to 165PF without a severely compressed load, I had like 1mm of air under the bullet with SP2 @ 165PF so I think it will be ok even with 3n38.

The big downer right now is that the competition season here is coming to an end, there is an event 500km from here next weekend but I am busy and can´t go. I really would like to shoot a couple of matches with the gun before the winter arrives. :(

I was at the range testing out a 3n38 load today, a 7.2gr load gave only 155PF so after getting back home I have loaded up a batch with 7.5gr powder to get me slightly over 165PF.

After some work at the range removing walls and charge lines for the winter I let a friend test shoot the gun with a 165PF SP2 load, it had gotten pretty dark so I took the chance to take some pics of the flames to get an idea how the comp works. Seems to me that it works pretty ok, not much flame coming out the front.

I´ve heard that 3n38 can produce pretty large fireballs if loaded hot enough, I will try to get some night photos of the new loads as well. :)

Can anyone recommend a good wear resistant paint for aluminum gun parts? Will a 2k engine block paint work? Duracoat is a tried brand but I don´t like paying an arm and a leg for a tiny can of paint if there are other paints out there which are just as good at decent prices.

Cheers!

I used to shoot 3n38 in 9major and never saw fireballs like the .38SC shooters do.

You also wont see 165pf with the 7.5 load.  You will need at least 7.7gr to make 165, and even then your spread may include some under 165.

Sorry if this question was already addressed, what bullets are you using? Awesome Work!!!

Thanks! I shoot 123gr copper plated LOS flatpoints.

What kind of barrel were you using? A friends Tanfoglio with a V10 hybrid barrel gets 10 PF less than I get from this gun with the same ammo.

Good to know that I am still on the low side of 165PF, making Major takes 160 so I don´t need to go much higher than 165 in average.

A shame that SP2 isn´t readily available around here, the cases didn´t fill up nearly as full with that powder.

It is a comped KKM with 3 popple holes.

With my undrilled barrel I should expect 5ish more PF than you with the same load.

I tried to chrono the load on the indoor range today but the damn ProChrono Pal I have only reads 1 out of 10 shots and that is if the right planets align. I shot 30 shots over it with different lighting and covers and not a single reading...

Next time I'll aim a bit lower and put it out of its misery.

Hi there! My name is Anders Johansson and I live in the northern parts of Sweden, been competing in IPSC for a year and I am thoroughly hooked. I started out in Production division with my Shadow 2 that I was using for national shooting but soon I figured out that it was in the Open division where all the fun was, especially since I am a hobby machinist and like to tinker with my stuff.

While waiting for my new Tanfoglio Domina to arrive I decided to build a backup gun out of the Shadow 2, the plan was to make as much as possible myself both to learn and to avoid pouring buckets of money over a gun that will spend most of its time in the gun safe.

After doing some research and getting some help from a guy here named Stefan Halvarsson I had a pretty good idea on how to proceed, first off was to cut the slide 8mm to expose enough barrel so I could fit the compensator. A bit hard on the nerves since there would be no turning back from here on... :)

The plan was to mill the slide but I soon found out that it was tempered and hard as glass, so I used the angle grinder instead and finished it off with a rotating sanding stone in the mill.

Since the slide material was so hard I had to figure out another way of securing the recoil spring, the original plan was to drill out the chamber and make a stainless insert just like on the Czechmate but instead I made a steel washer on the lathe and tig welded in place. No problem with coil bind so it turned out to be a very simple and neat solution.

To my surprise I found that the barrel was just as hard as the slide, a check with a file confirmed that I would ruin my M14x1 die if I tried, after some head scratching I decided to anneal the barrel end where the threads would go.

I kept the lugs and chamber section under water while heating the barrel to avoid losing the tempering there, it turned out a success and after cooling down for an hour I could thread the barrel. I also decided to make the cone for the compensator a separate part since I wanted it in steel while the compensator would be made out of aluminum. Here the finished cone is screwed onto the barrel.

I had 11mm of barrel left to thread the comp to, that should be enough I figured.

Time had come to make the compensator, I found a suitable chunk of aluminum in the back of the shed and started milling.

I tend to build things on the go, no cad drawings here just a caliper and some scratchings on a piece of paper. Here I am using the pistol to find the right angle for the comp profiling.

Here is the compensator after some finishing touches with the sanding paper, I don´t want to over do it at this point before I have test shot it properly and found out what the dot movement is like.

Here is the comp in place on the gun.

While waiting for a 3.3mm drill to arrive so I can make the threaded holes in the frame for the sight mount I borrowed a rail mount from a friend, I got permission to weld a simple thumb rest to it.

Here is a pic of the first shot fired with Major ammo, the ports seem to be working so I will try to find more time for shooting this weekend and try to make up my mind about it. I have a RTS2 sight on its way so with a lower mount and the RTS2 sight I think this will be a sweet shooter.
