650 Powder spilling on UP stroke?

Recommended Posts

I had powder spills when my shell plate stopped moving and I fixed that with a bearing kit, low mass ball and spring kit.

Now I have a new problem. When the ram goes up and the shell plate plastic cam comes OFF of the angle cam driver, it makes an audible click and the powder in the case jumps verticallly out of my 9mm case. I tried searching for “powder spills” but all topics were about when the shell plate rotates or stops rotation. My problem happens only on vertical movement of ram and has nothing to do with shell plate rotation. Anyone else seen this or solved this problem?

Mine does it if I don’t run the shell plate real tight. You have the bearing installed so try tightening the plate until it barely moves by hand and see if it calms the click.

I have not had that problem with my XL650.  I also added a rotocam to my press

Actually this part has nothing to do with the click. It’s the little “hammer” shaped thingy under the plate releasing. If you bring it up in slow motion you will hear the click before these parts separate.

Oh my bad!  I was thinking of the shell plate snapping to the next position.

I do like that part you put on though. I run my plate really tight and I could see where this would lessen the friction a lot

I run a bunch of his parts.  My press is super smooth

I use his Rotocam follower, Rotocam actuator, Top plate bearing and primer stop switch.

I do like that Roto Cam.  I have always been a believer that a bearing should always be used where to parts have rub against each other !!!

I agree!  I'm all for smoothing out the press.
