Atlas open load.....

I’m sure the more experienced open shooters will find my revelation amusing...but here goes. Went to Open with a throughly worn out STI waiting for my Chaos to be delivered.

Starting experimenting with Major loads of HS6 and WAC under 124 RMR RN in the Chaos .my initial loading plan was to shave the load as close to min. Major as possible. Well farted around with multiple loads and projectiles trying to chase the min. Load for major.

i kept thinking this pistol has to run better than I have it now with much better dot control. After reading a thread here about this young buck tearing it up with his Chaos , I noticed the load he was running was 7.2 of WAC thinking of going to 7.4 grns. ..wow..I was at 7.0.grns.

Anyway tested several hundred rounds this weekend loaded with 7.3 grns WAC, 124 RMR RM to 1.165. Rounds Chronographed avg 1390-1400.

It was a true revelation.....the gun handled flawlessly....dot has never been more stable and recoil was mitigated perfectly.

I am a slow study for sure......but glad I found this point in the process......sorry to droll on like this!

Now I just have to solve my DPP problems.....

I started shooting Open- 9 Major this year and went through a similar process as you. The thought process for me was try to get a light enough load so the gun shoots nice and soft, but still enough bang to make major. As I fiddled with different loads (HS6 under 124 FMJ) I finally got a load that kept the gun nice and flat, but it wasn't one that towed the line of major/minor! I ended up settling in on 8.0 of HS6 under a 124gr FMJ. w/ 1.15 OAL. It's giving me ~ 175-178 PF.

So basically what the net/net of it all is this: I needed more pressure/gas to work the comp appropriately. When I was in the lower range there just wasn't enough. A hotter round gave me the extra I needed. Now if I could tune the big goon behind the gun to shoot better, well that would a feat within itself!

Good luck on your process. I find this part of shooting the most intriguing for sure.

BTW, What's going on with your DPP? I just got mine back from them because it shut during stages in two different matches. They replace the circuit board.

I'm shooting 38sc and HS-6. I have been all over the place with my loads to. I started out high 182pf and then 178pf shot that for awhile and then went down to  172pf liked that a lot more. I got a older lot of powder that was real slow so was trying different loads. I still haven't found anything for the old powder that I like as it's real slow, 8.7gr of the new hotter powder is 172pf the old slower powder is 160pf. And the old powder is lighter in wieght too. But I did play more with the newer powder, and found 169pf is the best shooting that gun has ever shot.

I've been recommended to try VV N350 for 9 major as well. From  what I have been told it's a slower powder and shoots super soft. I may give this a try as well. The only issue is it's hard to find locally (Massachusetts) and about twice the cost of HS6. Eventually I will give it go as I like to play around with different loads and see if I can get the 'perfect' recipe that will make me a GM .. ?

I'm not sure if there's a question in there, but I have been running 7.4gr of WAC for major matches, making about 172.5 and 174.5 at the chrono between the two matches I've shot.  Tried to bump it down to 7.3gr , but now I'm averaging 167, so I think I'll try to get an average of about 7.35 - 7.37  over 20 loads or so so I can sit at 170PF.   I have noticed the hotter load is a tad bit flatter (working the comp more) but it is more "violent" in my hands and flaws in my grip are accentuated more.

In the end, shooting 174PF vs 170PF in a match isn't going to change anything, but I want to minimize the wear on my gun so I'm sticking to a softer load from here on out.

Their website claims their comp is designed for 170pf...

I noticed my Chaos runs 170pf the best with both 115 and 124g

Every gun is slightly diff...

For me I’m liking 8.6g of HS6, giving me between 168-171pf with Everglades 115s

For Everglades 124s, I was measured 8.1g of HS-6 at around 172-175 and ended up bringing it down to a flat 8.0 for simplicity sake.

And to compliment what I saw earlier, my oal is slightly short for 9mm as well.

VV 3N37 is not too different from N350. It used to be the default for people with good access to VV powders.
