I shoot Limited and Open and love them both but always wondering which to shoot at any given match wondering how those of you that do the same make your mind on what division to shoot on a given match or is it just a random decision

I was a serial division switcher for years.  Made the decision to just stick with open this year.  I've only strayed a couple times and that is when I've already shot the match the first day with the open gun.  I have guns for every division other than revolver at the moment.  Just built 2 CO guns so maybe this winter I'll shoot that for awhile.

My best advice is to pick a division and stick with it for a season.  Constantly changing guns does not lead to advancement in this sport.  Especially now that the HHF for most classifiers are tougher.

Was asked at the match last weekend, "what's the flavor of the month today"! that will give you an idea of how often I change.

I'm a gun guy and a shooter so like to shoot what I've got in the safe.

I suggest you pick a division and shoot it for a whole season, shoot the other gun/guns when you just want to go have some fun and not PRACTICE.

whenever I've done that (shot the same gun/division) I've gone up in the standings and classification.

So to answer your question - bring them both; look at the COF's and choose which one you think will be more fun on the day.

I started shooting Limited as a C shooter, did some SS but that was about it. When I got to B class, switched to Limited 10, brought that up to B class. Then grabbed the SS gun and moved my self up to B class. Fell in love with a CZ and started shooting Production, been shooting that for a couple years pretty exclusively and close to A now. If I get to A in Production going to go back to SS and see if I can get to A there. Did just buy an open gun and have CO too. Could pick one of those and see if I can get them out of C class.

Once upon a time, I had SV Open, SV Limited/Major, SV Limited/Minor, SV SS/Major, SV SS/Minor, SA Production and CZ Production.

SV Open gun-gone  My bad.

SA Production-gone Not bad

CZ Production-gone  My bad.

I usually shoot SS but since I am not going to Lim Nats, I have switched to shooting my SV Limited 9mm for a few months.  I'll switch to my Limited Major gun a month before Nationals just to get some .40 range time.

I like shooting the SS platform the most.

I add all the divisions i want to shoot, divide by the number of guns i own,  check the phase of the moon, stare at a 1911 for a while, spin the cylinder on a revolver, pick up a the pcc and think about HOA while airgunning, then and only then,  shoot limited cause all other divisions suck

If you make A in Production, won’t Open and CO get bumped to B anyway?  ?

2 (or 3) birds with one stone.  Boom.

The few times I was left with a decision on what to shoot at a local match I made up my mind by

1. Which gun do I need to improve with the most. Pick it.

2. Are any of my friends, squadmates or competition shooting one of the divisions I'm considering? Then pick it.

3. Finally, do I have a major match coming up in the next three weeks? Only shoot that division.

I actually like not having to make that decision as I sold a lot of guns for other divisions. I'm down to pcc, co and prod guns. That's it.

I'm in the same situation as well. I started shooting just falling steel. Then discovered USPSA and loved it. Started shooting L10 as were my shooting buddies. It was a natural progression that I had to shoot open ?. This season I have been concentrating on open, however I am now playing with CO, PCC and Three gun. (yes the wife thinks it's all the same! ?

So, how do I decide? Good question. My first choice is always Open (at least for this year) and I'll fill in open days when there's no USPSA matches with Steel challenge and 3 gun. (Steel challenge brings the same conundrum of divisions, but I take it less seriously so I go with the flow and what my buddy's are shooting). I'll shoot CO when I shoot indoors now.  Eventually I'll start shooting L10/Limited on a fairly regular basis, but I'm having way too much fun in Open to think that far ahead.

Having a safe full of guns and having to decide which to shoot isn't a bad thing. Not too mentioned making this decision is a lot easier then where to go to eat on date night!

One more item to add; A lot of times I look and see who I am shooting with and make a decision on that. There are days where I want to relax and not get too stressed about competing so I go the route of what I deem to be the least stressful.

These are the tough life decisions I like to have!

I would start the Open/CO before I got to A class in anything. I don't seem to be getting closer to A in Production anyway.

I use whatever I have ammo loaded for. Right now mostly PCC and limited. Depends on majors coming up. I shoot USPSA, falling steel, 2 gun and 3 gun. I would like to shoot my shotguns more. Just not many matches for it.

Typically what I have ammo for, or haven’t shot in awhile. I don’t have much rhyme or reason to what division I shoot.

Probably not the most effective way to advance, but it keeps me from getting bored.

LOL

I decided to switched from SS to Limited to focus and improve certain skills.  I've been tempted to switch back and forth but I think it would just be a distraction from my goals.

I do the opposite. When I find my skills slipping in Limited, I switch back to SS. It makes me slow down a bit and concentrate more on ensuring hits, especially on steel due to the ammo management it requires. My Limited skills greatly improved after a little SS shooting.

I shoot both PCC and limited, and shot PCC exclusively late last year and this year to get ready for the Golden Bullet Champonship, than it became real clear that my pistol shooting had suffered tremendously while shooting PCC and it was really hurting me in 3 gun. So I have decided to only shoot limited from now on in USPSA and work on the skills I need to get better at shooting handgun. PCC is like cheating anyone can shoot it well so do who really needs to practice it, I’ll just shoot it for special matches or when I get bored.
