9mm accuracy issue

I just finished my new open gun and I'm having some issues with accuracy. Not sure if it's the barrel, the load, or me. It's a 5" trubor barrel with no popple holes. Right now I'm running a minor load in it until I get the popples done. I'm using xtreme 124 gr rn with 6.0gr of autocomp ar 1.145. I'm wondering if maybe not enough powder and too short oal. I'm not getting any strikes in the comp. But I'm getting about 4-5" groups at 25 feet. I havent had a chance to chrono the loads yet. Not sure if there are any suggestions I can try before I can chrono them. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it.

There is a good chance you are pushing that bullet a bit too fast and its not holding together well. I believe most plated bullets are not rated for velocity over 1200 fps and you are probably right in that area
I had thought about this also. I was going to order a pack of mg 124gr jhp to try out to see if I get better results from them.

I think I'm going to try to back it down a bit more and hopefully go pick up a chrono this weekend so I can get a better idea of what speed they're going.

I've run FMJ's at 1.145" in my TruBor, and they were fine.

Also, 6.0 gr WAC is a fairly stout minor load - you're not too much

under Major.

No experience with Xtremes.

Now is the time to invest $70 in a chronograph   :)

... I may have to up my game...

5 inch groups at 8 yards...

my advice it try a lot of different things buy a few different kinds of ammo.

longer oal

and different bullets brand and weight

and see if any give you worse or better.

... then look for causes.

this should give you a sense of where to start trials for what your pistol likes.

what I have read here is that longer OAL usually results in more accuracy.

and the guess for why being the bullet is in the lands.

I've not tested that thinking and I have felt my accuracy (or apparent lack) was mostly me.

This is exactly what my next step is. I'm going to load some up longer and get a chrono abd start there. Also going to try a few different types and profile of bullets. I have some buddies that are going to give me a few different ones to try out for now.

I just went through this with my open gun. Turns out my barrel likes jacketed bullets. I was using coated.

So maybe order the jhp. I bet your groups shrink!
That's next on the list.

I ended up loading 20 rounds up to 1.165oal a.d got down to 2" group with 10 rounds. Seems it was just too short. But not sure if too hot since I still wasnt able to chrono them. Planning to do that tomorrow.
