benos
If you live in the southwest and enjoy being in the desert, you might know that all barrel cactus lean to the south, since the sun is always, for us, in the south. Which is an excellent navigational aid. I know of one barrel cactus, however, that leans to the north. Why is that?

benos
The last three answers are good... close, and super funny, in MIranda's case, but I was hoping for a more specific answer.

Paulie
Barrel cactus grows elsewhere? Southern Hemisphere, looking north to sun? Or it doesn’t prefer sun....
sixsixnine
I always thought they grew toward the most intense light source. Something about the spines protecting it from UV rays. Reflection off something shiny seems most likely.

Miranda
indoors... hmmm. while I can see a barrel cactus arm wrestling a tree for more sunshine... I can''t think up anything that would cause the sunshine to be from the north, is a large solar array part of the north leaning? I'd think the reflected light would crisp the poor thing... miranda
