corbinfouquet
Did some load testing with prima sv, first tested with 4.1 gr over 180 Bbi with a oal of 1.175. The highest spread being 19fps. Hit 174 pf. Bumped it down to 3.9 hit 166 pf. Tuned it to 3.97 and I'm right around 169pf. Shot a match this weekend with it super soft and sights came back every time. I'm super impressed with this powder. I won't be going back to n320.

muncie21
Thanks for sharing Corbin. I've got some SV on the shelf that I need to work up some .40 test loads one of these days. I've been using N320 and Prima V mostly, so interested in +/- 's of SV.

muncie21
Thanks for sharing @B_RAD the PF with the xtremes is a bit too close to min for my liking, however this info provides a good starting point for me. Thanks!

Thanks! Yes. I agree. I'm switching to coated because I felt I'd need to bump it up to 4.6-4.7 gr. I'm nervous that's getting close to too much pressure. Not that I saw any signs of it. With coted I'm gonna go to 4.3 and that'll be good. I'd also pay attention to which batch you have. I know last year there were some changes and different batches resluted in different fps with the same charge. corbinfouquet
I will try to get the batch number for you I keep forgetting. I'm guessing the difference is you are running a 5" compared to my 6". But almost a .5 in powder seems a bit much for barrel length

I think if you stay at 1.185 you will be fine at 4.1 gr

I think if you stay at 1.185 you will be fine at 4.1 gr I was at 1.185" with the Xtreme bullets. The blues have a longer OAL so they extend further even though the base of the bullet is roughly in the same spot inside the case as the Xtreme. The blues feed 100% so far even at the longer OAL. So, I didn't feel the need to shorten them up. I'm also getting roughly the same fps with the coated and plated with the 8% increase for plated. So, to me everything seems legit. FortyOverUnder
The last batch they sent me were .401. You must specify .400 or you will get .401Well that’s simply false. They’ve always been .400 for the years I’ve ordered them.

nutzach
I shot a few 100 rounds of 4.3gr of SV with BBI 180's today. OAL 1.135. No chrono, but they did feel just a soft as N320. No change in accuracy. Meters very nicely through the Dillion 650. I imagine I will chrono them at the Kansas sectional this weekend. Hope they make power factor. Shooting a CZ CTS. Steve RA
I use Clays (Australian) @ 4.2 gr with a 200gr LSWC which goes 844.2 FPS (10 rd avg) @ 1.250" and have not blown anything up in many thousands of rounds. It's a pretty accurate load also.
EEH
Have a friend that just quit shooting clays in major 180 ,and some 200 . He ran out, been shooting that stuff for years, never blew up any of his guns.. I shot lots of it in my revolver in 45 major it was the go to load. Steve RA
Australian Clays is currently (maybe forever) unavailable, present Clays is from Canada. I'm still using my stock of "Aussie" Clays and have no personal knowledge of the Canadian version.
CHA-LEE
Clays + 40 Major is like riding a dirt bike. It’s a lot of fun until you crash. And it’s not a matter of if you crash it’s a matter of when because the crash will happen. I stopped using Clays in 40 Major after a case head separation mid stage run at the nationals caused me to zero the stage. That wasn’t my only case head separation either while using that powder. Probably 15-20 of them over the 50k+ of Clays I shot. At some point the soft felt recoil of Clays isn’t worth the risk.
