Not really a screw up, I shot my first "Walls of Steel" match yesterday

I had a blast but I also learned quite a bit about my shooting when a timer is going.

#1 I'm pretty accurate, I don't waste a lot of shots, each stage had 25 plates , I don't think I shot more than 32 rounds

in any stage except for one that I tanked and shot 43 :(

My buddy videoed me and I him so we could watch ourselves.

# 2 I am slow as hell....no wonder I don't waste shots. I didn't feel like I was going that slow until i saw myself

Oh and the other people in my squad were smoking me for the most part. (most of them, a couple I did beat)

#3 I lose a lot of time reloading. production rules for this match 10 round mags.

I probably lost 2 -3 seconds per reload. Unacceptable  on the clock. Need to work on that.

I was told I wait for the plate to fall before moving on to the next one by the RO that stayed with our squad stage to stage.

I'll have to work on that as well.

Looks like you need to work on calling your shots better. waiting for the ding or the steel to fall is very slow.

yup that's what the RO told me as well.

I'm new to this game so trying to suck in as much "good advice" as possible. I'm so focused on actually hitting my targets,

that I'm not thinking about the clock as much as I should be.

Hi kmanick,

I started out shooting Walls of Steel, it's awesome and I still shoot it whenever I can. I can offer what I have learned over the years:

1. Shoot and move to the next target. If the plate doesn't fall you can make it up on a re-load. I find I go faster when I do this keeping a steady rhythm and pickup the plates on the mag change. This gives me the opportunity as I'm reloading to focus on the left behind plate. Plus I find for me anyway, that if I miss I tend to shoot faster trying to make up the time dwelling on the miss  and end up just missing faster!

2. COUNT! <-- very important. The matches I shoot is the same 10 round max, no topping off. So when you start the stage count to 9 then 10 for the rest of the mags. This will always leave a round in the chamber when you drop your empty mag; no slide release/racking needed. If i lose count, and I do on the occasion ?, I go by gut and feel and hope I mag change at the right spot. As you shoot more you will see what I mean about the feeling. This is not the best way to go about it I admit, but in the heat of it, it's the best I can do. I have dropped many a mag with a few rounds left, but for me it's better than running it dry and hearing that dreadful 'click'

3. Bring extra mags with you. (see above) nothing worse than leaving a piece of steel up and running dry. again, been there done that!

4. I personally load from a belt. It's not needed, but you'll reload faster than coming off a table

5. Don't stress over misses (see #1) rhythm, rhythm, rhythm

6. HAVE FUN and have a s#!t eating grin on your face, because that's what it's all about!

Good luck!

BTW, if you ever get a change to shoot it with a PCC it's even more fun!

That one mistake, alone, will cost you A LOT of problems -

Very Slow to watch the steel fall.

As Schaett said, you can always go back and make up the

misses, very quickly.    :)
