I'm definitely going to load some 231 for testing and also going to test E3 if available, if not then I will probably give Longshot a try.

You can get E3 at powder valley.

Longshot is some loud powder. We joke around and call it Loudshot. I've messed around with the idea of playing around with some E3 but been pretty happy with WST and N340 for all 40cal reloading.

Long shot is also pretty dirty.

And it'll go 163 when it hits 90*... be verymindful with WST. It's a good powder but very reverse temperature sensitive, at least my batch is.

@TennJeep1618 remember someone that went to Limited Minor at the 2016 Texas Open? I do...

Last year I chronod ammo loaded with WST taken from my basement at about 60-65 degrees. Then I chronod identical ammo that I put in the sun in a closed jar for a while. It was pretty hot to the touch and I had left it in the sun long enough to make sure the powder was hot. I saw no noticable difference in velocity. It could have been a couple FPS lower but was so close to the cooler rounds that i couldn't tell any meaningful difference.

Has anyone tried 231 for .40? I have some 231 laying around and thought about trying it out.
I run 5.4 of 231 under a 165gr Bayou Bullet at 1.150 OAL for a 172Pf in a 5" Atlas Nemesis KKM barrel

Was the N320 clean burning? I always heard VV powders are clean burning.

I've used a lot of powders over the past 4 years reloading and testing what powders I liked. VV powders are the cleanest I've came across. I used N340 for loading 40, 45acp, and 45lc. After a few hundreds rounds you could barely tell the gun had been shot. W231 or titegroup would have my gun filthy after 100 rounds.

True dat!  E3 is extremely close to being just as clean as VV powder and less than half the money.

I have a local relaoding store that also makes and sells commercial ammo. They got me a 15kg (33lb) commercial size container of Vihtavuori N340. Ended up having just over 35lbs in the container. Cost me around $21 buying it in bulk but worth it. I put the powder in 7 1gallon jugs from U-Line. I've been thinking about buying another 15kg container of N320.

Not bad, I pay about $16/lb for E3.  We use about 3 -8lb jugs a year so that's still North of $100 of savings.  You are buying it a lot cheaper than most people though.

W231 is absolutely filthy. I had some on hand which is why I loaded it but unless I'm forced to use it I'll find something else. N320 is relatively clean but outrageously expensive. I have E3 on deck but have five more pounds of N320 to work through first.

I heard Ramshot Competition is a poor a man's N320.

It's what I'm running right now. Powder drop is super consistent on my LnL. 4 grains is getting me 168 across just about every round I've chronoed. A couple out of 50 were up to 170, a couple down to 166. I haven't noticed a difference in the weather yet. When summer weather gets here I'll re-check to make sure I'm still Major. Bump to 4.1 is probably all it would need if it is reverse temp sensitive

Titegroup is difficult to beat. VV is clean, but a couple years ago due to costs and availability I decided to try Titegroup and have not found a compelling reason to leave it.

Picked this up today for testing, hopefully it goes well and this will be the only powder for now if it doesn’t work out then WST will be next.

"My load" is:

180 gr berrys flat point

4.8gr n320

Oal 1.18

Cci small riffle primers

Out of a 5" ria pro match.

Hits an average of 169pf in the summer.

I have not chrono'd this load in the colder months.

Sorry for they delay, had to purchase a chronograph before testing and here is the results......

STI Edge .40 180 gr. Blue Bullets 1.180

Winchester Small Pistol Primers

E3 4.0 grains

Low 889 Fps

High 915 Fps

Avg 903 Fps

PF 162.54

E3 4.2 grains

Low 915 Fps

High 944 Fps

Avg  928.14 Fps

PF 167.07

I'm extremely happy with the results, it was soft shooting and low smoke. I have found my Limited major load, no further testing needed.

Congratulations, however 167 PF is a bit too close for me, I like to make sure I can make Major PF no matter the weather or the ES. You have almost a 30 fps spread (which is not bad), but it would not pass the 165 Major requirement. You might want to consider bumping that up slightly to give yourself a safety cushion, especially considering changes in the weather.

Don't take a chance at failing a chrony test and having to shoot minor.
