Drill a mag release

Anyone had any luck drilling a mag release for a mag extension? I can not find one for a Caspian?

From my experience trying that if you are lucky enough to get it drilled, you will probably ruin the drill bit, you will break the tap in it. Did that a couple times and gave up. The mag release is very hard.

My experience showed that drilling was easy but tapping needs extreme caution. I snapped a tap off which basically makes the release worthless because it’s almost impossible to get that tap out or drill and tap a bigger size.

 

its doable just be cautious with the tap unless you’ve done much 4-40, 5-40 tapping

I have found big success when tempered the mag release (red colour or orange , it is not immportant), let it cool without hurry and then drilled .After that tapping is easy.

that is how I drill and tap S&W revolver triggers.

I put the trigger between copper blocks in the vise and just heat the part that needs to be tempered. The copper keeps the heat away from parts that need to be realy hard

Glad to read others had trouble taping mag releases.   Unbelievable how hard the metal in these things are.
