FBG001
I'm shooting my first match tomorrow after a 25 year hiatus. I was reminiscing about the "old days" and seem to recall shooting a .45 ACP 1911 straight up against guys with comp guns. I don't remember there being different divisions like there are today. Of course I'm old and suffer from CRAFT Syndrome (Can't Remember A Freekin' Thing), so I could be wrong. Does anyone know if there were always different divisions? BritinUSA
There used to be one division in IPSC, it was only the advent of comped, scoped and high capacity guns that led to Open being created.
Joe4d
Well originally the whole major minor thing was to balance 7+1 1911's Americans had with the 13+1 Browning Hipowers the rest of the world shot. If you look at old world shoot matches looked like it worked pretty well as Hipowers and 1911's flip flopped winning over the years. Once the double stack 45 came along, it was game over
OPENB
I think limited was added around 1992?
Hi-Power Jack
When I started in the late 80's (that's 19 80's, not 18 80's), I started with my BHP against Colt .45's but I was shooting minor for my 9mm minor. When I returned from a 12 year hiatus about 12 years ago, everything had changed - so I bought a TruBor 9mm Major, and the rest is all history

rowdyb
If you look at the list showing the nationals winners you can get a good idea of when each division came about.
