N320 40 S&W Load Recipes

I don’t know why but VVN320 just doesn’t meter well in my 650. Actually none of the extruded powders meter well. Don’t know why but I can set it up for 4.5g and randomly get anywhere from 4.4 to 4.7. Really sucks. Flake and small granular powder works fantastic though.

It has metered extremely well in both my 650 and later the 1050 and I have used the same powder measure when I switched from one to the other for the .40 S&W

I have a pile of PD 180 gr. FMJ RN laying around and would like to use it up with N320.  Look for plinking loads at this point, just punching holes.  Softer recoil.

I'm finding somewhat conflicting data.

CCI SPP

Glock 22 and 23.

1.125 OAL  (don't see this OAL that much except in the books)

Does 4.8 N320 seem about right?

Guys, how many FPS did each grain get you as you dialed the load in?

I just ran a new 180 gr precison delta JHP  load to 866 FPS on 4.9 gr of n320 out of my titan loaded to 1.185 COL.

Do I need to be at 5.1 or 5.2 to get to 940 FPS / 169 PF? Caveat- I was very close to my Chrono. Would that impact results?

Thought 4.9 would be closer to MPF. Could crimp also be a culprit? If so, please elaborate on how to measure the right level.

Results are not necessarily linear.

Assuming you're not using a labradar or magnetospeed, you should be 10 feet from the chrono.

Follow the best practices for reloading and test carefully. There's a variety of good reloading manuals out there. Vihtavuori's in available online but it's good to read a few.

4.8gr of N320 is in the major PF range. If you just want to plink, I'd drop the charge a bit.

I am running an Atlas Titan...My load is 5 grains of n320 loaded to 1.18 inches using Winchester brass and 180 grain Precision Delta‘s over Winchester small primers.   I use my I-gaging absolute origin calipers to confirm a crimp of .423 as well as a Dillon case gage.

Using my Labradar, this load delivers an average of 959 ft per second with a standard deviation of 8.1...172pf.   It’s a soft and accurate load.

 Hope this helps.

I’m running a MG 180 JHP with 5.3 of N320 at 1.185 OAL and make 171 PF out of a SV AET Schuman 5.4 sight tracker barrel with a sub 2 inch group at 20 yards supported, not a ransom rest. Get the same out of a 180 FMJ Winchester bullet, except group opens up to about 2.5 inches. Still pretty good either way. Hope that helps someone

4.9 grains N320, 180 TCFM Zero bullet, 1.185" OAL, various brass, Federal primer.  Makes 171 power factor out of Atlas 1911 or STI 2011.  By the way, what do you crimp to?  I've crimping to 0.423 - 0.424".  It's been suggested that I crimp tighter to avoid the possibility of setback during feeding and subsequent high pressure.

I crimp between .001-.002", so if the case measures 0.424 a few millimeters below the mouth, then I go to the very edge of the mouth and it'll measure between 0.422 and 0.423".

More crimp does not help avoid bulleset back. An undersized resize die (U die) will do that. If you put too much crimp on you can run into other problems. Remember, most semi auto pistol cartridges are head spaced off of the case mouth.

I just crono'd this load today:

Cloudy, 36°, 4.8gr. VVN320, 180 Zero jhp, 1.180"COL, Win small pistol primer, 918 FPS, 165.2 PF

Gonna need to bump it up a bit.

(gun was an Atlas 5" 1911)

Turtle, Adam at Atlas suggested crimping to 0.421.  I've started doing that and it seems to be working well.  I do use a Lee resizing die, so that probably helps.

Helps immensely, near same setup, same components, just needed a good point to work up.
