Joeg26er
Suggested Loads for 45 acp 5" 1911 with Alliant Red Dot Powder? I have quite a bit to use up... also are coated bullets the best cost for performance? Im seeing people using 200gr projectiles
njl
It all depends on what you’re trying to do and whether you’re shooting jacketed or non-jacketed.
wgj3
Above post is important as far as knowing what you are trying to accomplish... I have used a bunch of it and "Promo" to make Major PF for USPSA SS and IDPA CDP. Red Dot is a bit cleaner than Promo and has a different density. I have used it with projectiles from 155gr cast (not so awesome for me) to 230gr jacketed and coated. Should be fine with coated bullets in the 185-230gr range. Should be able to find plenty of data to get you to a starting point and then adjust from there to get desired PF/MV/recoil level...
zzt
Go ahead and use it up. It will work well. You can make Major with it, but I wouldn't bother. Here is Alliant's old data for target loads. Fed 150, 4.00 Red Dot, 200gr LSWC, 805fps @ 9400psi @ 1.250" OAL.. Stupid soft, as are any of the target loads for the same weight of Clays, Bullseye, Clay Dot and Promo. You would have to work really, really hard to blow tyour self up loading 45 acp.
Joeg26er
thanks So 230gr will make major and shoot soft? looking at using coated acme swc bullets or suggestions? Edited February 12, 2018 by Joeg26er
zzt
J, you can make more than Major. Alliant data for the 230 JHP is as follows: Note: Alliant's data shows max loads for jacketed and recommended load for target. F150 primer, 5.0gr RD for 820fps @1,9500psi, OAL 1.23". For the 230gr lead bullet, 4.0gr RD for 810fps @12,800psi, OAL 1.19". So you can cut this way down to get to a 172PF instead of 188.
