United Multi-Gun League?

I didn't take your statements in negative way at all.

Maybe a new thread just to discuss what is going on with 3-gun is warranted. Facebook groups seem to be more active discussion place for 3 gun these days, which is stupid for reasons we all know, but I'd like to hear from this community specifically. Need to figure out what's up.

Agreed. I've resisted the Facebooks thus far but I may find myself in an MD position before long and will probably have to give in. Apparently events can no longer exist without an active FB presence. Maybe once I sign up I'll have more access to the 3 gun populations opinion of current events.

Our club uses UML rules for 3gun. I think there are too many divisions. I with they would make "Heavy Metal" great again, .308, .45, 12G pump. On the plus side, I like that UML rewards participation and set up activities.

Which ruleset are you guys using ? The UML traditional or expedition?

some of the penalties seem a bit steep, while others aren’t very high.  30 seconds for a missed long range (300+ yards) target is huge!

Our local club joined UML and we are trying to figure out which scoring system is best

The penalties that your club decides really depend on your range layout and your members. The lower penalties work best for shorter bay stages while the higher penalties seem to work best for more traditional 3 gun matches. 30 Seconds for a 300 yard target is in line with many other major matches and forces people to take their time. There are a lot of people that would skip those if they were only 10 seconds.

I haven’t been to a ton of major matches but from what I remember most of the bigger matches I’ve been to that have long range only give 10 second penalties for missed targets, including targets out to 5-600 yards.

Maybe my memory is faulty, but I remember an enhanced penalty for long range targets in years past.

Missouri 3 Gun Championship http://mo3gc.com/Match Rules.pdf

8.8 Rifle targets that are 200+ yds will incur a 20 second penalty for failure to neutralize. 25 seconds for failure to engage.

USPSA Multigun https://uspsa.org/documents/rules/2019_USPSA_RIfle_Shotgun_Multigun_Rulebook.pdf

9.3.2.7 In the course description, long range rifle targets may be designated as enhanced penalty targets. A miss on an enhanced penalty targets can be increased to a 15 or a 20 second penalty. This is only to be used for targets beyond 100 yards.

Rocky Mountain https://www.rm3g.com/Rules2016.pdf

This isn't for just a miss but FTE sportsmanship which can be difficult to judge.

Failures to engage that are NOT due to forgetfulness or running out of time, but are rounds sent downrange or not even fired with no real attempt to hit the target will be assessed a higher, poor sportsmanship FTE penalty. These penalties can range from 30 seconds upwards, and for severe offenses may even receive a stage or match DQ

Long Range Steel Miss > 100 yds = + 20 seconds

I haven’t shot most of these matches, other than Rocky Mountain. We are trying to put together a smaller regional match in Rio Rancho NM with 4-5 bay stages and 1-3 natural terrain stages. I’m glad to hear that there are some bigger matches using similar rules so competitors shouldn’t be upset about bigger penalties for farther targets.
