Dry Fire Training 9/19/18

·         Outer Limits

·         Accelerator

Despite the extremely high humidity, I went out and got back into the dry fire routine.  I started out just working on my footwork from box to box on outer limits. (I’m trying to focus on improving my footwork for outer limits and USPSA).  After performing several reps and breaking a good sweat. I added the gun.  I started with the gun in my hands focusing on my transition and then shooting 4-5-stop.  After several good runs, I ran the entire stage with a 3.70 par time.  I did notice that my footwork was better. I’m sure as I progress my speed ladder drills, my time will decrease also.

Accelerator- after a small equipment adjustment, I set the par time for 2.10 seconds.  I had approximately a 90% success rate with the low par time.  As I’ve said all along, I need to translate my training times into my live fire times.

·         Outer Limits

·         Accelerator

Went out to practice the two stages I'm having issues with.  I started by working on movement from box to box.  I noticed that my right knee was sore.  I ran five repetitions for time and my knee was sore.  I stopped and ran some repetitions on Accelerator. I noticed that I was slow transitioning the gun and i was not calling my shots effectively.  I stopped and called it a night.  I guess 10 hours I spent today at a meeting sitting didn't help my training tonight.

·         Outer Limits

·         Accelerator

I started out by doing 5-6 sets of 1 foot in each, 2 feet in each, 1 in lateral, 2 in lateral and the Icky shuffle on the speed ladder.  After I worked up a good lather, I ran several repetitions on outer limits focusing on my transition from box to box.  After I was huffing and puffing from non-stop training, I ran 5 repetitions with the gun.  The timer was set at 3.70.  I just slightly slower than the timer running the repetitions. Next up was accelerator.  I had the par time set at 2.10, which is over 110% of the peak time. (Epic fail)  I moved the par time to 2.20.  I was closer to making the par time.  I was tired and it’s nice to know that I wasn’t that far off with 2.20 on the timer.

Dry Fire Training 9/28/18

I decided to start back pyramid training tonight.  I’ve been putting off training due to the extreme heat and humidity.  After battling the heat of July, August and most of September, I was physically and mentally worn out.  I mustered up the determination to get out and practice.  As expected I was sloppy on my transitions.  I performed 5 repetitions for each of the following times.

·         Outer Limits

·         .80 par time from low ready to plate #1

·         .35 transition from plate #1 to plate #3 1.15 par time (T1)

·         .35 transition from plate #2 to plate #4 3.20 par time (T2)

·         .35 transition from plate #4 to plate #5 3.55 par time (T3)

·         .45 transition from plate #5 to stop plate 4.0 par time (T4)

·         Accelerator

·         .75 par time from low ready to plate #1

·         .28 transition from plate #1 to plate #3 1.3 par time (T1)

·         .45 transition from plate #2 to plate #4 1.48 par time (T2)

·         .45 transition from plate #4 to plate #5 1.93 par time (T3)

·         .45 transition from plate #5 to stop plate 2.38 par time (T4)

Dry Fire Training 9/29/18

I made a change to pendulum in how I shoot it.  When I got to the last transition, I made some small mistakes with my plates.  I was shooting the wrong order.  Smoke & Hope went fairly well.  I was happy with my speed of my transitions and my overall ability to see the plates faster.  Overall, I’m satisfied with my performance tonight.  I missed 8 days and I expected to be a little rusty.  I made some silly mistakes and I had some really good runs.  One week until my next match.  I’m hoping to get a couple more of scores up to 100%.  Here’s what I worked on tonight.

·         Smoke & Hope

·         .60 par time from low ready to plate #1

·         .22 transition from plate #4 to plate #3 .82 par time (T1)

·         .45 transition from plate #5 to plate #4 1.22 par time (T2)

·         .22 transition from plate #1 to plate #5 1.44 par time (T3)

·         .45 transition from plate #2 to stop plate 1.89 par time (T4)

·         Pendulum

·         .75 par time from low ready to plate #1

·         .40 transition from plate #1 to plate #3 1.15 par time (T1)

·         .45 transition from plate #2 to plate #4 1.60 par time (T2)

·         .45 transition from plate #4 to plate #5 2.05 par time (T3)

·         .55 transition from plate #5 to stop plate 2.60 par time (T4)

Dry Fire Training 10/1/18

I worked on two stages again today.  Each stage was broken down in 5 separate stages where each plate was its own stage with a par time.  The first was the draw to the first plate, second was the second plate added to the first,  third was the third plate added to the first two, forth was the fourth plate added to the first three and finally last was all four plates added to the stop plate (Pyramid Training) each plate was five repetitions for a total of twenty five repetitions for each stage.

I felt really good working on these two stages tonight.  With me alternating pyramid training with hyper mode training, I seem faster and smoother on these stages.  My transitions were fast and snapped to the plate.  I was able to “See” very fast tonight.  All in all, I’m happy with tonight’s performance.

·         Five to Go

·         .75 par time from low ready to plate #1

·         .50 transition from plate #1 to plate #2 1.25 par time (T1)

·         .50 transition from plate #2 to plate #3 1.75 par time (T2)

·         .50 transition from plate #3 to plate #4 2.25 par time (T3)

·         .50 transition from plate #4 to stop plate 2.75 par time (T4)

·         Showdown

·         .80 par time from low ready to plate #1

·         .35 transition from plate #1 to plate #2 1.08 par time (T1)

·         2.05 transition from plate #2 to plate #3 1.43 par time (T2)

·         .35 transition from plate #3 to plate #4 1.78 par time (T3)

·         .45 transition from plate #4 to stop plate 2.13 par time (T4)

Dry Fire Training 10/3/18

I again worked on two stages in preparation for Saturday’s SCSA match.  I mixed it up a little today with cross training.  I did one stage with the hyper mode training and one stage with pyramid training.  Showdown was done with hyper mode and Speed Option was done with Pyramid training.  Showdown was set at 1.70 seconds.  I actually made a few of the repetitions.  Speed Option was the more intensive pyramid training.  I need to remember that once I have the gun mounted, all I need to do is move the gun horizontally across the stage since all of the plates are the same height.  With this in mind, the stage actually progressed nicely.  I liked the flow of this stage today.  I’m looking forward to shooting it in competition to see what progress I’ve made during training.

·         Speed Option

·         .75 par time from low ready to plate #1

·         .38 transition from plate #1 to plate #2 1.13 par time (T1)

·         .50 transition from plate #2 to plate #3 1.63 par time (T2)

·         .50 transition from plate #3 to plate #4 2.13 par time (T3)

·         .50 transition from plate #4 to stop plate 2.63 par time (T4)

Dry Fire Training 10/4/18

I once again worked on two stages in preparation for Saturday’s SCSA match.  I decided to stick with the pyramid training for another day.  Tomorrow, I will attempt to dry fire the eight stages in preparation for the match.  I seem to be picking up a little bit of time if I remember to keep the gun on the same horizontal plane when shooting the stages.  I find It easier to index when I just have to move the gun horizontally across to each plate.  Obviously the exception would be Pendulum.  Pendulum requires 2 shifts in the transition to accommodate the height difference.  Both stages are feeling better.  I’m anxious to see what my training has done to lower my times on these two stages.

·         Accelerator

·         .75 par time from low ready to plate #1

·         .28 transition from plate #1 to plate #2 1.3 par time (T1)

·         .45 transition from plate #2 to plate #3 1.48 par time (T2)

·         .45 transition from plate #3 to plate #4 1.93 par time (T3)

·         .45 transition from plate #4 to stop plate 2.38 par time (T4)

·         Outer Limits

·         .80 par time from low ready to plate #1

·         .35 transition from plate #1 to plate #2 1.15 par time (T1)

·         .35 transition from plate #2 to plate #3 3.20 par time (T2)

·         .35 transition from plate #3 to plate #4 3.55 par time (T3)

·         .45 transition from plate #4 to stop plate 4.0 par time (T4)

It's the day before the Steel Challenge match.  I ran five repetitions through each stage in preparation for the match.  I used the following par times:

  • Accelerator 2.38
  • Outer Limits 4.0
  • Five to go 2.75
  • Showdown 2.13
  • Smoke & Hope 1.89
  • Pendulum 2.60
  • Speed Option 2.63
  • Roundabout 2.13

I just need to remember to keep the gun on the same horizontal plane for each stage except Pendulum.  I'm anxious to see what progress I've made during training the last few weeks.

I'm absolutely disgusted with my performance today.  I couldn't get anything to go right.  Frustrated to say the least.  I didn't feel comfortable with my practice this week and it showed with today's results.  I finished 7th out of 41 and 3rd in PCC.  My scores sucked!

Enough said.  I have it on video, now I get to relive the misery and watch what I did wrong.

Thanks for the advice.  It was a rough day.  I haven't shot that bad in a very long time.  Since I just made GM, I think I was pushing to go faster.  I had another GM tell me today. "You're a GM now, No more excuses!"

I decided to take the night off from training, in an attempt to figure out why my last two matches had such a huge swing in score.

Thought #1 I made GM and I’m trying to push for faster times.

Thought #2 my training program was flawed and my practice sessions didn’t do anything to help my performance.

Thought #3 I’m over thinking it and I just had a bad day.

The data doesn’t lie!  I didn’t execute my recovery plan on showdown.  I had a plate miss count as a score seeing that I had two misses on the previous run.  You might look at Roundabout as a win, but my low score is 7.83.  So, I’m still 2.0 seconds above my low time.  I have the match video, and I watched it.  I’m debating on posting it.  I don’t want to dwell on the negatives, so I’m thinking I won’t post it.

Time for a reboot!  I’m thinking my timer for my android is off.  I use the app Dry practice drill for ease of use and convenience of setting up multiple strings.  My though is to use my CED7000 set for a single par time.  I’m going to see if my timer app has anything to do with my inconsistency in stage times.

I’m also going away from hyper mode training for the time being.  I’ll be using pyramid training and the old fashioned 100% stage times for my training for the next few weeks.

Upon further research, I figured out how to enter 5 par times into the CED7000.  Initially, I entered each par time into a separate string.  The timer was taking the total time and not just the par times.  I then read the manual and determined that I just needed to enter the initial par time and add each subsequent split time.  The total par time was exact.  I liked how the timer gave me 6 beeps.  One beep for the start and one beep for each string totaling 6.  It’s almost like a metronome where it beeps and you can see your progress on the stage.

Here’s what I worked on exclusively today (Speed Option)

.75+       .40+       .49+       .49+       .50          =2.63

Draw     T1           T2           T3           T4           Total

Only issue I noticed is that the Par time on the CED7000 can’t be set under .60 for the first shot.  So, Three stages will just have to use a par time and not individual par time beeps.

Reboot Day 2

Today choice of training stages was Accelerator and Pendulum.  I like the multi par time offered by the CED7000.  It helps keep me in rhythm when dry firing on the stage.  I did notice that Accelerator was right on pace with the par time, but Pendulum was a little faster than the designated par time.

Here’s what I worked on today (Accelerator)

.75+       .40+       .43+       .40+       .40          =2.38

Draw     T1           T2           T3           T4           Total

Here’s what I worked on today (Pendulum)

.75+       .40+       .45+       .45+       .55          =2.60

Draw     T1           T2           T3           T4           Total

Reboot Day 3

Today, I decided to work on Outer limits in preparation for tomorrows USPSA Match.  I’m really getting used to the multi par mode offered on the CED7000.  I’m also using the new SCSA Peak stage times with the new PST’s.  When the new times drop in January, my percentage will drop from 96.52% to 91.57%.

Here’s what I worked on today (Outer Limits)

.80+       .40+       .43+       1.83+     .40          =3.83

Draw     T1           T2           T3           T4           Total

Since Outer Limits has movement, I figured it would be good training for tomorrows match (USPSA).  I worked on several repetitions with the timer on multi par mode.  I performed several repetitions just moving from box one to box two.  Today’s training went very well and I’m getting used to the lower PST’s.

I’ll probably go out after dinner and work on shooting on the move.  I’ll probably do the box drill with the Hopkins dots I have painted on the side of my shed.

I changed gears the last couple of days.  I actually broke out my 3gun gear and started doing some training with my pistol.  I put a Vortex Venom 6moa dot on my M&P pro.  I really haven't practiced with a pistol in a while.  Since I have a 2gun outlaw match coming up next weekend, I decided to practice some draws and reloads.  I'm also still getting used to the dot on the pistol, so i need to learn how to find it after my draw.

I'm taking a break from Steel Challenge training for the next week or so.  I need to decompress from steel challenge training.  I was pushing my times after making GM and I noticed that my technique suffered.  I know I'm fast enough, So I just need to relax, regroup and take some time away to clear my mind of the bad habits I started doing.

I've been slacking the last couple of days on posting training.  I'm simply doing 10-15 minutes of dry fire training with my C/O gun.  Since I haven't shot pistol in almost a year, I want to practice picking up the dot, drawing from a holster and reloading.  I still have the PCC bug, so I'm sure I'll get back to rifle training after the match next weekend.

Live fire practice today with the C/O gun.  It was funny to see me search for the dot.  I need to seriously work on finding my dot faster.  My best draw was 1.90 and all the others were right around 2.0 seconds.  I think once I have the slide milled, the dot will be lower and it will be easier and faster to find the dot.  I worked on the plate rack and a single USPSA target.  I did several drills which included:

·         Two shots on a USPSA target and one steel on the plate rack.

·         One head shot on a USPSA target and one steel on the plate rack.

·         Alternating plate rack (1-3-5) and (2-4-6)

·         Alternating plate rack (1-3-5) and (2-4-6) with reloads between groups.

I also chromed three different guns. (C/O pistol, AR and my featherweight PCC)  The chrono results were exactly where I expected them to be.

I’m leaning toward J&L Machining to mill by slide for my M&P.  I like the dovetail mount, but I think the optic will be easier to pick up without the adapter plate.

I worked exclusively on my draw and picking up the dot faster off the draw.  After I laughed at yesterday’s draw to first shot time, I know I needed to work on picking up the dot faster.  I’ve seen improvements each day with being able to pick up the dot, but I have a lot of work to do.  I’ve been neglecting my PCC training, but I will start focusing on my PCC after this weekend’s 2 gun outlaw match.

  • 3 weeks later...

11/10/18

I've taken some time off to reflect on some major changes that have happened in my life this year.  So, naturally, I got to shoot a match today.  I was rusty, slow and had trouble at times finding the dot.  It's only fitting since I haven't touched a gun in over 2 weeks.  I'm extremely happy with today's results.  I finished 13th out of 56.  For the first time in a long time, I no longer have the desire to be the best.  I was just happy to shoot with some friends and have a fun day.  Anyway, as expected, I made some mistakes. Here's the video from today's match.  Check out stage 3 where I double tap the forward falling steel causing it to stay in place.  I spend what seems like an eternity trying to figure out what to do.

Forward falling steel is someone telling you to check which way the steel falls next time...  also putting a small popper directly behind a forward falling popper...

Looked like a fun match.

I was brain dead.  I actually RO'd half the squad before I shot.  I knew it was backward falling.  Why I double tapped it is beyond me.
