9mm or .38 Gold Team

Recommended Posts

I am planning on getting a Gold Team some time in the near future and I am wondering if one caliber or the other (9mm or .38) runs better with the factory comp?  Or are there any other reasons one is preferred over the other?

Also, please feel free to post pics of any open div Tanfo's.

You're a CZ guy, why not the Czechmate?

If you must have a Gold Team, I suggest the 38, I choose 9 over 38 for any other gun, but the V12 just has too many holes for 9, you have to push it pretty hard and will increase your chances of cracking a slide or chewing up the barrel lugs (don't expect any help from EAA if anything breaks).  The tiny factory two port comp is trash, that's why they put 12 holes in the barrel, I hogged one out once and put three holes at 12 o'clock, but it wasn't a huge improvement:

Just recently purchased one on 38 super. I was lookong to get one in 9mm but it is impossible for me to find it. Ordered 4 times in different places and they had to be cancelled because they werent actually on stock. Anyways.. the gold teams come with two barrels with comps. One for factory ammo and the other for non factory ammo(actually stamped on barrel) with 12 pop holes/popples/vents(whatever they are called). I use mine for competitiom use and just recently developed rounds with CFE to make Major. People do make major with the 9mm somehow. After working with the 38 super i feel its safer to use this casing to generate enough gas for the appropriate powders. With what i've learned so far i would recommend the 38 super. Like i said, i was looking for 9mm but very happy i got the 38. If you do get the 38 super, please please please get supercomp brass. Tried shooting my first match with it over this past weekend and had a hell of a time because of the rimmed 38 super(not supercomp) brass.

I was a CZ guy but the tanfo fit my hands so much better. :)

I've also used a modified, factory, three-port comp from the old V8 Gold Team with more success, but neither is as good as the box stock Czechmate.  I drilled three holes straight up, then two more which I don't think made it better_20151107_092416_zps0uvx3wkv.thumb.jpg.8bf2d762fb7a9d6239e9e296e9b6221a.jpgIMG_20160716_112919747_zpsny1vnrf3.thumb.jpg.ef595d3d8ca5f02dbf991fe541e640e3.jpg

Checkmates are nice, but they (CZ in general) seem to break more parts than tanfos. A buddy is on his 3rd trigger spring this year (which i had to give him one b4 our last match where he stomped me!)  A different buddy with a checkmate just broke his slide stop  during a steel match last weekend.  I have 4 tanfo's running and (knock wood) nothing broken yet.

Always wondered why CZ has more breakage than the Tanfos .

I have been running a Match Xtreme lately for 3 gun and SC. I prefer the ergos, grip profile, and trigger guard over my TS. If they build a czechmate 2 some day with a frame like the S2 I will buy one.

I started looking too for an OPEN RACE GUN. Had a long time to think about 9mm or .38 Super. In the end i decided to go on with .38 Super but i didn't buy a new one. I build it up from different parts. Just bought an old Limited 9x19 HC from a friend and then i ordered a conversion kit from Tanfoglio. Now i got a nice CUSTOM SELFMADE gun. Shot about 500 rounds true it without any feeding or ejection problems. Now i am working on the factor because i got the V12 model ;) Need much powder but i got some differents to test. The optic on this picture was just for testing. In the end i will go with Leupold Deltapoint Pro... just have to wait for the optic now..... and yes OPEN RACE GUN shooting is much more fun than PRODUCTION or STANDARD ;):)received_10213214363892202.thumb.jpeg.c75ac3723f0cfea2e04170e38fd6bc87.jpegFB_IMG_1499288743429.thumb.jpg.6b0c69a248eb024f70adf984651a62b2.jpg

looks great! You got the conversion kit on the EAA website?

He's in Switzerland, EAA has only imported a few GT conversions in the past five years, and when they have one they cost almost as much as the gun.

ya I figured it was something like that because I certainly did look for a good bit.

Seems like .38 is the way to go.

Any thoughts on Optic mounts?

Was considering the Henning, and the IPSC Alex.

I have an IPSC Alex thumb rest on my match Xtreme and it is nice enough.

I used horizontal Cheely mounts on all my guns, if you want one for Tanfoglio I have a few extra.  The CMore Slide Ride may not be the sexiest dot, but they're tough, cheap and have the biggest glass available; the horizontal mount puts it closest to the slide:

all I care about is that the dot is low and easy to spot.

Also, what size is that dot?

The IPSC Alex looks more sleek.  Not as many color options but that can be fixed.

Does anyone on this thread have one of these in .40 or is that just a stupid idea?

That is a good question.  Is it simply a capacity issue?  Or is it getting the comp to run properly with a .40 open gun?

I don't know about the comp yet.  With a slow enough powder you should get enough gas to run the comp.  I have an open upper for a CZ TS that I am playing with running AutoComp.  Seems to be making plenty of gas but I've only fired a couple hundred rounds so far.

For capacity I'm getting 25 in my 170mm mag.  It is obviously at a slight disadvantage on 30-32 round stages but short of that both will be doing a reload somewhere.  Upside is that brass is way cheaper and safer getting to major over a 9mm gun.  .38 should make major with ease.

There are four things I can think of working against .40 Open guns:

- capacity

- availability/price of light bullets (not much available lighter than 135gr)

- the holes in the baffles are bigger, giving the gasses less area to push against

- the volume of the barrel behind the bullet is 27% larger, reducing the gas pressure when it gets to the comp

As we were talking about optic mounts.....

The mount with the four pins will be the one for the Leupold Deltapoint Pro. Available colors are silver or black. Since it's made out of aluminum you will be able to change the color by yourself. Just anodize it like you want. I will go for the black one.:) There are also thread inserts so tighting and loosing screws isn't a problem!

The mount with the two pins is for the RTS2!

Those are some slick looking mounts.

I was able to grab a slide ride and a cheely mount. If I change to an RTS 2 at some point I will grab one of those.

Still working on a slide and comp barrel, but the build is coming along nicely.

IPSC Alex Thumb rest mounted, slide racker is enroute.

Big thanks to Kneelingatlas for all the help planning how to convert this into an open gun.
