.223 Barrel Life in 3-gun

Recommended Posts

Guess it depends on the barrel and the ammo used,

but how long does a 3-gun .223 keep its accuracy?

Thought I saw something on this few years ago - compared

different barrels and different types ammo (steel cased, etc).

I put 13k in my JP 18inch light weight before replacing it (Bought it back in 2011). It would group solid under MOA when cold but as it got hot it would open up to about 2-3MOA and shift a little. I'm keeping it for my Bay run local matches.

That's it   !!!!

Thanks, Flatland

Guess that answers that question    :)

Not exactly.

They were dumping ammo as fast as they could.  Not really a valid test on the way anyone actually shoots, even 3-gunners who are probably harder on barrels than anyone except guys at machine gun shoots turning money into noise.

What would be really interesting is that same test done with a realistic firing schedule.  Typical of 3-gun matches, say, 20-50 rounds down range in 10-60 seconds, then allowed to cool fully before doing it all over again.

It proved that bi-metal jackets are harder on barrels, but how much of that was the excessive amount of heat that was generated.

I can't remember the brand, but I had some off-brand pencil barrel that was shot out in a few hundred rounds.  The current pencil barrel is from Adams and it's been awesome.  I think it has 4000 rounds on it and it's still just as tight as it was before.
