The HS-6 with 115's shot nice, really nice. Even though my heaviest loads only made 169PF. Dialed in my 115 & 124 loads with a little more powder and can't wait to work more with both at 172PF. Gotta say, at this point HS-6 with 115's is right there as the best feeling load I've tested. Primers looked nearly identical to same PF WAC loads.

How dirty was the hs6. I hear clean from some and dirty from others. For me CFE Pistol is extremely dirty.

As a rule you want to use the slowest burning powder that will make major with the case capacity you are working with. This usually will feel softer and makes the most gas to work the comp. This applies to all the open calibers but IMO more in a 9 major. The COAL is going to play a big part in how much pressure is made, seating a bullet even a slight amount deeper with the same powder charge can increase pressure a lot. There are other ways to lower the pressure spike in a particular load like the twist rate of the barrel or more free bore.

Over many years I have seen many open guns experience things breaking and cracking from pushing the limits of what the design and material were meant to handle. The cause from these were usually able to be figured out and smiths were able to build better more reliable guns. Then came the 9 major with the rule change and the amount of guns breaking has gone way up and this is no coincidence. I think there are things that can be done to help lower the chances of breaking something in the loading of the 9 major pistols.

what powder would you use then.  Im about to redo my load completely and not sure where to go.  I want something clean and slow but not a full case.  Im on a 650 that isn't always smooth

Autocomp is fairly clean and does not fill up the case.

This picture will give you an idea of what a major charge of some popular powders under a 115gr bullet looks like:

If you want less fill and cleaner than HS6, I recommend Silhouette, I've tried pretty much everything and I never recommend Autocomp.

I have seen basically nothing on silhouette  how slow is it compared to HS6 or 3n38.  and im on a 124 grn bullet so not quite as much powder

#3 Agreed. My CK gun with the short throat and PVD barrel is a challenge here. I ordered a carbide throater, but that's 6-8 weeks custom build and $$.

Actually, @1911luvr has a guy who makes them in carbide. I bought one off of him last week -  at the time he still had 2 left from his last batch.

It cuts hardened Glock, XD, and Walther barrels like butter. The same barrels that laughed at my Cymler highspeed steel reamer from Midway.

Those products are AMAZING. I just ordered the locator buttons and hope they will help. Spilling powder was such a huge pain for me. Thank you for sharing that link friend.

That's weird, because I believe that the weights of powder above are incorrect. Here is what I have with a 9mm case holding 9.1 grains of VV 3N38:IMG_0812.thumb.JPG.2e6d00e1060ab92a4546655428fe0e1c.JPG

The case on the left is the 38 Super Comp case that held the powder that is now in the 9mm case on the right. Something seemed strange in the previous photo and do not appear accurate. Also, it must be said that I had a hell of a time keeping the powder in the 9mm case and cannot imagine compressing such a round.

I just thought it fair for people to see ACTUAL powder charge sizes, no some mystical variation. Just so the kids at home know, the 9mm major is going to need a faster powder to make major. From my experience, faster more energetic powders produce greater recoil.

There is a decent variation in case volume with 9MM depending on make and how it is processed. I'm currently loading 9.3 grains of 3N38 in mixed range brass using LEE U-die in 1050 with MBF. No problems with too much powder at this charge for me. I experimented a few months ago and found that for me, 9.4 grains is where I started having about 5% of bullets tip over after placed by MBF from too much powder. Good for me in that 9.2 grains makes 170PF in my Chaos.

Here are some pics I took this morning illustrating my 9.3 grain 3N38 charge.

I loaded 9.7 vv 3n38 under a 152 grain bullet making major. I love vv powders for their cleanliness. But if you load on a progressive set a bullet on it right away, the powder is right up there on the mouth
