RickT
I've loaded >80K rounds with N320 for our lightly sprung 9mm 1911s (no PF for steel challenge). My wife shoots 3.7gr N320 behind 115gr Acme, while I'm currently shooting 3.1gr behind 147gr Acme/Bayou. In a major oops I find myself with 16 lbs of N340 in addition to a good supply of N320. There are N340 loads from 115gr to 147gr and I'm sure I can work at the bottom or slightly below listed load for any of the bullet weights, but I'd like to hear from folks with N340 experience which bullet weight they might recommend as a starting point. I expect the recoil to be a bit more than either of the N320 loads we're currently shooting.
Service Desk
Never loaded 340 but I have burned up my fair share of 320 and 330, to be honest I can't notice any difference between them when they are loaded to the same pf.
lgh
I found myself with 4# of N340. Bayou 147gr, 3.8 N340, OAL1.140.. Avg 961 with SD 7.2 and ES 22. Not a soft shooter.
superdude
If working with one gunpowder, the softest feeling load is generally a heavy bullet. Since they are usually shot at lower speeds than light bullets, they don't accelerate as quickly and have more of a 'push' feel. Light weight bullets that have to go faster therefore accelerate faster and feel more 'snappy'.
