jcameron996
I am working up a load for hi tek coated Lyman#356637. My original plan was to use the pile of win231 I have accumulated, but looking for load data hasn't turned up much. Just looking for some input as to what everyone else is using. So far I have tried power pistol, titegroup and unique all of which I have published data for. I haven't found anything impressive yet.Sent from my 2PQ93 using Tapatalk
oteroman
Try Alliant Sport PistolI hear one of the characteristics in the design was to work with coated bullets. W231 3.5grs. tyler2you
I'm also running 3.5 grs. of W231/HP-38 behind a 147 gr. BBI in a Shadow for 130 PF (1.125 OAL). Great load and not smoky like TG.
jcameron996
I went ahead and tried win231. I started at 3.1 grains at 1.058 oal for an average of 825fps. Since my bullet drops from the mold at 156 grains I am getting just over minimum power factor. I may bump it up just a touch more for insurance, but so far I'm happy.Sent from my 2PQ93 using Tapatalk
MemphisMechanic
231 Works just fine. n320, Clays, Prima V, and similar speed powders will shoot even more softly. Titegroup even, if you don't mind the smoke and the carbon buildup in your gun.
njl
Who are you trying to impress? 9mm, 147gr coated bullets work well with just about any powder. I've used as slow as Longshot, and as fast as Promo. Use a suitable amount, and any in this range should be able to get you from the very high 120s to mid 130s PF. My favorites are Universal and Promo.
jcameron996
Wasn't aware I was trying to impress anyone. Just looking for some information. Since I have been "coached" in the past I guess I will just say thank you for your input.Sent from my 2PQ93 using Tapatalk

jcameron996
Gotcha. Think I'm going to run with win231 for awhile.Sent from my 2PQ93 using Tapatalk
jcameron996
I am officially giving up on the Lyman 356637 bullet. No matter what I do I can't keep it from tumbling. Back to the 125 grain black bullets.Sent from my 2PQ93 using Tapatalk
njl
Looks like you're not the first to have this issue with that bullet.
jcameron996
I think it is just too long to stabilize at the speeds I want to shoot it at. I could probably switch to a slower powder and drive it harder, but that kind of defeats the purpose.Sent from my 2PQ93 using Tapatalk
thompsoncustom
How long is the bullet? what diameter bullets are you running? .355/356/358 What bore you bore slug at?
jcameron996
Tried .356 and .357. Bore slugs at .355. Bullet is .682 long. Gave up after .357. I'm chalking it up to a failed experiment.Sent from my 2PQ93 using Tapatalk
thompsoncustom
Hmm ya must just be pushing them to slow. Ive shot 168gr swc .750 long out of my 9's and there fine but if you push them to slow they tumble.
jcameron996
That's what I'm thinking, but if I push them any faster it defeats my purpose.Sent from my 2PQ93 using Tapatalk

Steve RA
The twist rate in your barrel may have something to do with the tumbling, there are 1/10, 1/16 and 1/20 twist rates in various 9mms and accessory barrels. I think a 1 in 10 twist rate would probably work better than the slower twist rates.
jcameron996
I couldn't leave it alone. Loaded up a few more with 4.2 grains of Power Pistol. Got the velocity up to 950fps and low and behold the tumbling went away and accuracy was OK, but not spectacular. I guess I'll be able to use up the bullets, but it isn't going to be the soft shooter I was hoping for.Sent from my 2PQ93 using Tapatalk
Bullets
Try the blue bullets. 147s and n320 is the magic recipe

jbarnett50
I believe N320 runs almost identical to Win231/HP38 in my gun too.

3GDad
I was using 3.2grains of Titegroup, then moved to 3.3 grains of N320 which was nicer (softer, not as hot, clean) but recently tried 3.8 grains of WSF for my 147 grain 9mm loads and was blown away. Very soft and very accurate, also reasonably priced. It's definitely worth trying WSF with 147gr 9mm Edited February 12, 2017 by 3GDad
