davidwiz
Any MIM or cast (not machined) part should be replaced and installed by a competent gunsmith.
Keyst0ne
Per their website STI doesn't use MIM parts anymore. The Marauder is a new line so pretty confident this applies. I wanted a gun which did not require modification from factory condition for duty use. Q: Does STI use any MIM parts? A: In the Past STI has used high quality MIM parts. We no longer use MIM parts on our firearms, we use the highest quality machined parts available
blaster113
I'm a diehard Limited shooter and shot various 2011's over the past 12+13 years in the sport. Also have 20+ years of LE service. I'd never consider carrying a 2011 for duty even if I could. Don't like how the plastic grip is secured to the frame. Even though you can Loctite the screws, its a weak point for a duty gun. I've had extractors go bad after about 3000 rounds. I've also broken thumb safeties and grip safeties in every STI and custom build. Pistols like the infamous Glock are not without its share of problems (Glock 22 Gen4 pins walking out anyone?), but they definitely have less potential issues to worry about. Can I ask what you did that you broke a grip safety? I've never even heard of that happening. That's like wearing out a hammer spring.
OPENB
A fully loaded Eagle-style 2011 would be HEAVY. I wouldn't do it for that reason alone. Trust me, after being on the job for 26 years now & a little less than 3 to go, your back will thank you.

What about using a Para double stack with an all metal frame? Obviously, thumb safeties, extractors, etc are a still a problem but frame wise the strength would be there. tha1000
I am having a 9mm commander length top end fit to my older SV sdc railed 40 to be my "new" carry gun. I have no concerns about the gun's reliability (at least as a factory built .40, will do significant testing with the 9 when I get it back), but I do have concerns with the reliability of the magazines and locking the slide back at the appropriate time, etc.. Hoping to have my gun back in a couple of weeks.
tha1000
When I took a class from Frank Proctor a year or so ago, I talked to him a lot about his Marauder... he said it was all stock sans a trigger job and that he had about 100k rounds through it. At the time, he said it was the only pistol he owned... so carry, teaching, competing, etc.. all done with a stock STI Marauder. That conversation is really what made me decide to have this gun converted to a 9. It just turned out to be a lot more economical to convert this SVI that mainly just sat to a 9 instead of buying a Maruader. pm07
I carried a TRP in .45 on duty and off as LE for several years. It did the job and I never felt like I was outgunned. I tried a STI Marauder in 9mm couple of years ago . I liked the weight, caliber , ability to use a WML but in the end I went back to a Glock. The juice wasn't worth the squeeze in terms of costs, , magazine availability etc.
3djedi
You should go with the new STi H.O.S.T. DS. Definitely get the MBX mags for it. Or at least some TTi basepads and have somebody tune the stock mags. That gun comes with a textured grip, light rail, threaded barrel, and is cut for an optic. It's set up for co-witness. but a double stack would be significant weight to carry around all day. https://stiguns.com/guns/host-ds/ Edited March 14, 2017 by 3djedi
Ozy
Tactical 5.0 will serve you well. I know a couple of Leo's in TX , who use them for daily duty.
Chutist
LEO Senior Range Officer, Submachine gun instructor Entry Team 20 years. I carried a Kimber for years but got tired of the number of mags I had to stash on me to have the Department required 45 rounds on my person. I now carry an STI Tactical 5.0 and my Department Issue gun Glock 22 - depending on assignment. Unlike some of the 2011's and Para's I've owned - The Tactical 5.0 eat's everything I've given it. 4 of us at my department carry them, all TRL-1 lights in G-Code SOG holsters - no issues. We run the stock STI mags and some MBX. Adrian can set MBX mags up for duty use. ;-) 13 coil springs is the big change, costs a couple of rounds but makes the mags stand up better to duty use. Plan on replacing springs on regular basis...
Sig0621
I just bought a marauder for this role. I haven't put many rounds through it yet, but that should change soon. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
RangerTrace
All guns can and do break. During my last class, two Sig 226s went down. Most people who carry a 1911/2011 on duty will inspect their pistol on a routine basis. I've carried doublestack 1911s for the majority of my Ranger career without any issues. Yes, the steel gripped SV was heavy, but it always ran. I traded for a new STI VIP Costa edition in 9mm a few weeks ago. The main reason was to have an IDPA gun. But, it shot so good, ate everything I fed it and was so accurate, it found it's way onto my ranger belt!!
STInky
I'm late to this thread, but just came across it. I bought and carried an STI Tactical 5.0 in .45 for patrol use. Great pistol, no malfunctions with HST's, and the familiarity to the Edge I shoot for competition made for an easy transition. My only complaints were: Weight. Besides the heft of the pistol there was the additional weight of the 15 rounds of 230 gr HSTs in the pistol and 30 extra rounds in the mag pouch. I know it's simple math, but 230 gr .45s are twice as heavy as 115 gr 9mm's. Length: The 5" Tactical in a Safariland duty holster rides lower than say a Glock 17 or 22. I found myself banging it on the seatbelt buckle and console getting in the car. Wound up selling the Tactical and now carry a Sig Legion SAO. If I had it to do over with the STI, I would love to try a 4" Tactical in 9mm. Less weight with the lighter rounds....and the shorter length. Anyone use a 4" 2011 9mm for duty ? Are there any additional concerns with the 4" over the 5" ?
Sig0621
The tac 4.0 with threaded barrel was what I wanted but I shot a marauder and loved it so I just went that because the shop had one on order. Plus, the threaded barrel was a $200 option and put it at the same price as the marauder. I'm used to carrying a a Dan Wesson specialist on duty so the length will be the same. Hopefully the extra rounds won't weigh me down too much. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
