aandabooks
I have the itch for a new gun. Thinking about another single stack gun. Currently have a Ford Custom in .45. Now that I'm loading .40 for Limited it brings that caliber into consideration. The two that I have been looking at are the Sig Max or the Dawson CRP STI. Both are rigt around $1300. Which one is the one to pick?
bjones6686
I have a Ford Custom in 40. Gavin makes a great gun. Both of the guns your looking at are nice. The Sig Max uses a different holster then a standard 1911 and if I remember it also has the 80 series firing pin block.
aandabooks
I used to have a Sig in .45 before the Ford came along. Still have a holster for it. A Ford Custom isn't in the current budget but I would get another in a heartbeat if it was.
jcc7x7
Short of a custom the dan wesson guns or Sig's seem to be the nicest
mont1120
Ok, forgive my ignorance, what is a series 80 firing pin, and why is it considered bad?
fishsticks
Ok, forgive my ignorance, what is a series 80 firing pin, and why is it considered bad? Series 70/80 described here https://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=15201It's just more parts to get in the way, and some feel it makes for a worse trigger feel. There is a part available to delete them.
kcd19
series 80 fire-control systems had an extra safety, a plunger/mechanism to actually block the firing pin's travel

Thanks for posting. PS The explanation helped too!
mont1120
Thanks for the replies, I can safely say (pun intended), that I will remove that system when I get mine this fall in .45 ACP. Where I shoot, sand, grit, snow and rain are part of the equation, and I do not need extra parts getting full of junk and hanging up during a match. chuckstur
I just started shooting a Sig Traditional .40 in SS and could not be more pleased with the gun. 3.25# trigger with a hell-for-stout mainspring. Series 80 trigger and all. A narrow FO front sight and magwell and you are good to go.
Foxj66
I have a Trojan and have been pretty happy with it. The slide has been tri toped, and trigger job with EGW parts. The only thing I don't care for on the Trojan is the front strap so plan to use grip tape if you get one. Also plan to add an Ambi I don't think the CRP comes with one Edited September 13, 2016 by Foxj66
Al Capizzo
I really feel we're in a Golden Age for handguns. Damn near hard to buy a bad one. Some are certainly more refined than others but when you get to pick between Sig, STI, Dan Wesson, Springfield and probably a few others, this is a good thing! aandabooks
Mods can lock this up if they want. Ran into a couldn't pass it up deal on a EAA Witness Limited Pro. By time I get mags/holster/internals the gun budget will be gone.

Rimcrew
It's a bit more expensive, but Guncrafter Industries makes an amazing .40.
RayUSPSA81
Sig Max, just can't get behind one. I want a Trojan or good old fashioned SS to shoot SS and at nationals. I am looking for a 40 now

mikeAZ
Quote Don't thumb your nose at the single stack RIA 40's. They are very well fit, nice and tight. . Most have the Para style ramped barrel. Bull barrel only at this time but I'm building a 40 bushing barrel version for SS using all RIA parts Bud's will usually do a price match. caspian guy
I wish ria would do bushing .40 guns... I looked at converting one of their bull barrel guns, but between turning down the barrel and cutting the recesses in the slide to retain the bushing I don't think it's practical.
