Ruffian
Nothing seems to be wrong except it seems bad.. I am shooting 230 Gr RN & 6.8gr. of 800X. The load shoots well but shooting at an indoor range over a white table, I am seeing quite a bit of unburned powder flakes. Has anyone else run into this. I didn't see this problem using Unique. Any opinions out there?
JD45
I wouldn't worry about it if the load is safe and performs well. Most of us never get to check a white table. 2400 always leaves a few grains in the gun. But it's a great powder in the right load, like so many others
bowenbuilt
800X is world famous for leaving unburned powder flakes all over everything in .45, sounds very normal to me. A quicker burning powder in the medium to high range will be a lot cleaner than 800X but if that is what you have shoot it.
Hi-Power Jack
A faster powder will be cleaner than 800X but if that is what you have shoot it. Yes, and a faster powder (WW231 or Bullseye) will produce LESS perceived recoil
mont1120
I have a lot of 800X, a rush buy when powder was in short supply. I spent the winter playing around with it, and I had unburnt powder littering the floor. I run a 230 Blue bullet with as little as 5.2 grains of 800X, and thought that was the issue. But, even when the weight was raised to regular levels, I still had some powder flakes laying around. I do like the powder, but it does leave my pistol dirty and it leaves a fair amount of residue, but my biggest issue is throwing consistent weights. It does not meter well, and I would never use it for competition if meeting major was an issue.
BlaineD
800x doesn't care for light loads in my experience. Put those 5.2gr behind a 147gr jhp in 9mm, you will be pleased with how clean it burns. Don't use it for bunny farts! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
noylj
It isn't an issue in semi-autos unless you refuse to wash your hands and arms after shooting. If you go back even 12 years ago, most folks worried about accuracy and didn't bother about unburned powder or dirty powder. All the powder that will burn has done so by at least the first inch of barrel, so loads that leave unburned powder can still be extremely consistent and accurate. The only issue is with revolvers where a grain of unburned powder could get under the extractor star and prevent the cylinder from closing. 800X is a very slow powder for .45 Auto, particularly with the very low pressure of the round. About the slowest powder that works well is Unique. Try AA2 or N320.
mont1120
As a matter of fact, I did run 50 rounds of Xtreme 147's and 800X this weekend, and you are right Blaine, they were accurate, and the recoil was low. Certainly my plate spinning rounds for 3 gun, but I will move to Blue Bullets to pick up some velocity.
BlaineD
As a matter of fact, I did run 50 rounds of Xtreme 147's and 800X this weekend, and you are right Blaine, they were accurate, and the recoil was low. Certainly my plate spinning rounds for 3 gun, but I will move to Blue Bullets to pick up some velocity. I picked up 11 power factor going to Blue Bullets from JHP. Had to back it way down! 3.2 grains was giving me about 860 avg with the blue bullets. My normal production load is 3.4 of Unique under a 147 JHP. It was about 860. I only switched to the Blue Bullets 147 RN, and it jumped to about 980. My favorite do all load of 5.3 gr of 800x under a 147? It would be too much for lead. I don't need that PF with what I do now anyway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Edited August 5, 2016 by BlaineD
