jnr88
I'm doing an experiment in China and gunpowder will not be available. Any ideas for a great substitute is greatly appreciated.

tyler2you
cake sprinkles might be a good substitute for Varget. There are probably some seed based spices that could work as well.

perttime
Does the substance need to look like gunpowder, or act like gunpowder? If act like gunpowder, what property are you looking for?

Miranda
I decided that you should avoid poppy seeds, so I did not mention that. I think you should use sugar. you can get various coarseness . and the cake jimmies Idea is a good one. chia seeds and sesame seeds and clover seeds can be tried. miranda
dauntedfuture
since you said gunpowder I have to assume your talking blackpowder. You can look up the volume by weight for FFF or FFg etc and then find a substitute for the weight and volume.
jnr88
Thanks for the help. Ground coffee seems the best. It is easy to change the granularity.
BeerBaron
you can do the same with regular smokeless pistol and rifle powder. most makers list the bulk density (VMD) all you need is a device that measures volume (I believe one cubic centimetre) then you can experiment till you find an analog with the same bulk density as the powder you wish to replicate. dillon
Ground walnut tumbling media might be of similar density and bulk as many ball/spherical powders, albeit with sharper edges.

Gabe Athouse
Rainbow sprinkles are delicious. Salt and pepper are my favorite spices. I recommend a high quality coarse sea salt that you can grind to your own liking. There are some excellent Mediterranean varieties I encourage you to explore. Black pepper corns ground to your liking are also delicious. Try the costco brand for a good value
