jmackey66
I'm new to the 2011's, although I've shot and loaded ammo for 30 years. I just bought a CK Arms Hardcore Limited 9mm and need some help with a starting point for the break in ammo. It is my understanding that it will not function well with standard, minor PF loads until after it is broken in. It comes with a 9lb spring. I'm an hour from the range, so I'd like to load at least five-six hundred for the first trip. I have Winchester brass, Precision Delta 124's in FMJ and JHP (1.150"??), CCI pistol primers, Fed Small Pistol Magnum primers, Autocomp, and CFE. Does anyone have any experience with the break-in on this gun? I'm estimating about 6.4 grains of CFE behind the FMJ at 1.150" should be about 1250 fps and the upper limits of a CCI pistol primer? Advice?
v1911
That's going to be one hell of a hot round. If you've shot this load before and you're comfortable with it, then by all means, go ahead and heavily lube the gun and shoot away. I'd recommend bringing that charge down though. maybe something down in the 140-145pf range. The objective here is just to smooth things out and break in the springs. The lube and powder residue will act has a lapping compound and help refine all things metal that are in contact with each other. Just be sure to keep it well lubed and dirty during that initial 500 rounds. After that you can scrub that bad boy clean and drop your PF down again. Just an observation, but most seem to prefer a PF between the range of 130-135pf. YMMV.
Noximus03
Your gun came with a 9# spring? Did it say that on packaging, or something? And Mr. V is right, you're going to have a of close to major if that your plan. You can get away with a lot less powder. I sent you a PM, get back to me. jmackey66
Thanks for your response. I wanted to shoot 130 pf and that's why I purchased it. I had been advised that I needed heavy loads for break in. But when I racked the slide back, that didn't seem like a good idea. It had a 9# package in the box, but I've got 7&10 in my parts from other guns.
Hi-Power Jack
I'm an hour from the range, so I'd like to load at least five-six hundred for the first trip I have to agree with 1911 above ^^^ I would add: I understand you want to load 500 rounds for your long trip, but that would make the PLUNK TEST m o r e important so you don't end up with a LOT of ammo that is too short or long to feed thru your gun. You'd have to do The Plunk Test, in your gun, with each different bullet - they might require different OAL's.
dons
I have to emphatically agree with Hi-Power Jack. Make sure you do the plunk test on each of your combinations before you make the long trip. I recently acquired a Kimber 1911 9mm. I had an assortment of hundreds of rounds of 9mm that work fine in my Glock, CZ75, and Browning Hi-Power Clone, ranging from 95 to 155 grain bullets. Went to the range and a number of them would not chamber because they were too long for that particular barrel. Reduced OAL in subsequent loading and most of them work fine at shorter lengths. PLUNK TEST!!
jmackey66
Thanks, Everyone. I appreciate your insight.
BeerBaron
Yeah I also agree nothing near that hot is needed for break in. Make sure it's well lubed. An 8 or 9lb spring sounds about right. With the 124gn pills if suggest right around 1100fps should be just fine. That's around 135pf which should break it in nicely. I'm not all that familiar with cfe but if you figure 6.5 for 1250 fps I'd be looking in the 5-5.5gn range. Definitely check out the oal in the barrel and adjust the load as needed to account for any reduction in oal from your known loads. Enjoy.
jmackey66
Quick followup just in case someone finds this thread later. Here is my data from break in. First five hundred rounds were flawless, like a sewing machine that spits bullets. As a testament to the builder, the fired brass will go fully into my EGW case gauge (slight resistance) without resizing. CK Arms builds a quality weapon. This is my data in my gun, only given to document my experience with it. Winchester range brass 1.160” oal (plunk tested in my barrel) 4.4 gr Hodgdon CFE (over max from published data) 147gr FMJ Precision Delta CCI small pistol primer .377 crimp 1003 fps/ 10 shot average by chrono in 5” barrel --5 ft. from muzzle. No obvious pressure signs on brass or primer. 84 degrees, 64% humidity 9lb spring worked well. Would maybe try 10lb next time. unburnt powder residue was minimal, but stuck to my arm. Shot to point of aim from builder, no adjustment needed. Edited June 10, 2016 by jmackey66

Deerhunter9790
Good deal, I have a thunder limited and ran some factory 115s from wal mart during the break in. Now I run 147s with 3.3 of Titegroup and it runs great.
