Alaskapopo
I recently finished a Remington Armorers class and will be getting a good deal on one of their products. I already have a nice 308 and .223 bolt gun. Was thinking of a Sendero in 300 win mag what is your guys opinion. I also considered the same gun in .264 or .300 ultra. GrumpyOne
I have a Sendero in 300 win mag...I bought it from the Crestview Police department SWAT team when they went from 300 win mag to 308 for their sniper rifle...excellent gun.
Religious Shooter
I have a R700 SPS Stainless in 300 win mag. Relegated for hunting. I guess living in Alaska the caliber would be a good choice for you. I had to change the trigger to a Timney because the stock one just sucked. And I got the bottom metal from PTG to use AICS LA mags. This version just drops in to the factory BDL inlet. http://pacifictoolandgauge.com/remington-700-detachable-mag-bottom-metal-dbm/1440-remington-long-action-la-stealth-military-style-flush-mount-detach-mag-bottom-metal-5-rd-magazine.html But it is a long action. Thinking about it now I would have gone with a 300 WSM. AICS type mags are available. Since it is short action I can use the SA stocks I have for the R700. Shorter throw than a long action. Probably just a hair less powerful than the 300 win mag. I'm sure you reload. So the lack of available factory rounds isn't that huge of a deal. Same 30 caliber bullet as the 308/300WM. Factory 300 WSM are only available with lighter contour barrels.
Alaskapopo
I don't want a hunting rifle this will be a long range precision rifle. So weight is not an issue. The heavier the better. Pat
michael1778
Do they come in anything 7mm Rem SAUM or the like? You might like the ballistics and recoil better in a snazzy 7mm or 6.5mm magnum cartridge, considering the intended use.
RecoilJunkie
the 300WM is expensive, the ultras are even more expensive.... so pic your poison. personally I went from 300WM to 7WSM, getting far better performance out of a short action package (I know its what you listed). My buddy got a 7Rem Mag sendero that turned out to be pretty good and he's been killing deer at 700-800 yards with it for the last few years. Religious Shooter
How far is "long range"? 1000 yards? 1500+ yards?
Stlhead
Most matches are short action only 3200fps max. If you are going to shoot paper and steel for sport get a 6mm, if you are going to shoot critters and people get something else, I have no recommendation on that sort of thing. Alaskapopo
How far is "long range"? 1000 yards? 1500+ yards? 1000 yards. I won't shoot it as much as my .308 but I wanted to have a magnum class rifle since I did not have one. What better reason lol.

Not going to be a match gun. Eventually I will rebarrel my .308 for that if we can get the sport going up here. This is going to be a pure fun gun to blast steel out to 1000 yards. I want opinions on this rifle but thanks anyway. Pat
Alaskapopo
http://www.remington.com/rifles/bolt-action/model-700/model-700-xcr-tactical I thought about getting a .338 Lapua to for giggles.Pat

TRG65
My experience has been to consider Rem 700 donor actions. I want to shoot heavy vlds at mag length so I've had to be prepared to replace the barrel or at least have it rechambered because the throats are usually too long. jrswanson1
I have one. I got the barrel threaded and had a PWS FSC30 installed. I can call my own shots with it now. I also had the smith lighten the trigger to a more reasonable 4 lbs (originally 12 lbs!). I get MOA with 180gr Remington Core Lokt hunting ammunition. Since powder supplies are getting better, I will be reloading for it now.
SCTaylor
Had the chance to shoot a custom build Sendro that my boss owned. It had a comp, action work, and a trigger job; FREAKING AMAZING. I expected a pretty harsh kick but dang it all if it wasn't super smooth. Honestly, not that much more than a lever Marlin 30/30. I'd go for it in a heart beat Alaska. He had that thing from Montana, to Idaho, to Iowa, to West Texas. Many long shots that brought home to steaks.
NateTSU
My brother in law has a sendero In 300 ultra, he has added a muzzle brake and a timmney trigger. It is a very nice rifle and much more pleasant after he added the brake.
lwink
I'd personally go 300 ultra over win mag, as it is a very capable and accurate round well past 1000, especially if you are loading for it. If you aren't hand loading maybe go with the 300 win. I've experienced lot of senderos, and more often than not I've seen them be able to get sub .5MOA at 100 yards, one even all the way down in the low .2's regularly with 5 shots (that was a 220 swift I believe). As with any mass produced rifle there is a chance something is off, and the throats are generally long as someone said so you may have to abandon the magazine and single load to get your best accuracy, which for steel has never bothered me. Then again, you may get lucky with some heavy Match Kings as they tolerate jump pretty well in my experience, also had some luck with the heavier Berger hybrid/otm with some longer jumping so I could use magazines for hunting rifles. I'd say absolutely go for it, maybe drop in a jewell or similar trigger, and worst case scenario you'll have a good platform (action, trigger, stock) to get a custom barrel on down the road for a good price it sounds like. Also I'd 100% get a brake on it, I have a 338 and put it Muscle Brake on, and I can shoot it all day with 300 grain bergers and never flinch. If you're shooting prone at all this style brake is also nice as it has no downward ports to get dust everywhere.
