40 S&W Load data for 200s

Recommended Posts

I have found a lot of load options for 180s and seem to be pretty good, I like 4.4 of clays and bbi 180s. I have some 200's I want to try out but there is far less load data available. Do any of you want to share your powder combo for 200 coated?

I am currently loading to 1.195 and .4215 crimp out of an sti framed 5" gun. Looking for 170ish pf

3.55 gr Clays with .400 200gr Ibejiheads loaded to 1.200" gets about 169.5 PF for me.

Have you ran through quite a few of these, I have heard clays can be petty touchy when going over 180's? I'd like to try this load out.

Yea probably at least 500. I have recently switched to Open, but the 200 gr With Clays i like best so far in Limited. A little softer and most accurate i have loaded.

Justin, Bob shoots 200s in his ltd gun, would be good to ask him.

I tried some but prefer the feel of my 180s

I asked Bob but he uses wst, that's a powder I have not been able to find at the two lgs's I go to. I wanted to try and use wsf, clays, ramshot comp or hp38 since I have quite a bit of all those

Of that list of powders I'd give Clays first billing. The others are slower than I'd like unless I had to load short for some reason (CZ or similar short pistol).

Anybody load TG under coated 200s?

I Chrono'd some, out of a CK Arms limited gun with KKM barrel, .400 200gr Ibejiheads, loaded to 1.20", on a 53 degrees F day.

3.6gr TG = 166.5 PF

3.8gr TG = 173.5 PF

4.0gr TG = 178.2 PF

Thanks Earth!

Did they shoot pretty decent?

They shot OK, but I had better options.. I chose to go with Clays at about 3.55gr for 169PF - warning - only load long with Clays at major (in case you have not seen this warning yet)

OUTSTANDING!  Thanks, so much, for that info: basically corresponds to what I had imagined as starting loads for WIN 231, AutoComp & 800-X. Don't see much lead data for this weight in 40 S&W.

p.s. Plated 200GR RNFP on sale (-5%) + FREE SHIPPING @ one of the  "usual suspects", ends TODAY.  Looks to be a good load for punching paper, IMHO.

Thanks, again!

Most all lead data, has been tranposed into lead with HiTek coating on it.

I've been running 4.1-4.2 of WST with a 200 gr Bayou Hitek coated lead, 1.180 for years never has gone below 169 at chrono.

4.3 of AA2 behind a 200 grain hardcast out to 1.185. Burns clean pretty soft to shoot, probably want an 12-14 # recoil spring as well. keeps me around 169-172 consistantly.

remember when working up loads in YOUR gun... your chrono is your second best friend.. right behind common sense :)
