dogtired
I am planning a 10-22 or a 1911 rear adjustable. When planning the install should I adjust the transplant sight to the middle position and install to the same height as the front bead? Just trying to reduce my trial and error. dogtired
My gunsmith friend came over and we discussed it. He is not building sporty shotguns so has not done a project like this but he said "you cant look under the rib" so no sense in not having it bottomed out when installed. So that helps. ltdmstr
It's very common to install a 10-22 sight on a shotgun. Do a search (prob in the 3-gun section) and I'm sure you'll find some pictures of that, as well as other types of sights.
coltlover
Here is a 10-22 sight on my Benelli M2. Folds flat for bird shot stages, up for stages with slugs.

dogtired
Guncat has been kind enough to volunteer some barrel stubs to practice on. Just working up my courage before I dive in... Thanks.
T Bacus
You need to shoot the gun first. Set a target at 50 yards and shoot it with slugs. First shoot it with your mid bead directly aligned with the front bead, or fiber optic. If this produces a point of aim impact then you want to mill the rib so that your sight of choice has the bottom of the notch even with the top of the rib where the mid bead is located when the sight is set fully down. If the above causes a low impact then shoot the gun with the mid bead under the front bead, looking like a figure 8. If this results in a point of aim impact then install the rear sight so that the bottom of the notch is the same height as the top of the mid bead (or a few thousandths lower) above the rib where the mid bead is mounted. If your chosen rear sight has plenty of adjustment then just install it with the bottom of the notch even with the top of the rib when the sight is adjusted all of the way down. Here are a couple of pictures of the Hi-Viz read sight I installed on my Versamax...
jimmymuller
I just got my first gun, the name of this gun is Remington 870 12 gauge, with a rib on the barrel. My friend has the same gun, and we are getting ready to pattern our guns for spring turkey. I saw some video's of how to install shotgun rear sight install. After I easily installed it on my shotgun.
