RL1050 45acp to 40 Cal

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I own a RL1050. I bought it used about 10 years ago and it was setup for 45acp. I also have a 550 press with quick changes for 9, 38, 40 and .223. I love the versatility of the 550 but I am shooting a lot of matches lately and with the practices, the 550 is taking more time than I want to load all my ammo. I am mainly shooting 40cal but also 9 major in an open gun. I want to convert my 1050 to handle the duties for loading 40 cal. Am I correct in my research, that I will need a 1050 caliber conversion in 40 and a small primer conversion? I have read that I can still use the large case feed plate. Is there anything else I need for the conversion?

If I want to add 9mm, can I use the same conversion as the 40cal and then buy a 1050 quick change for the 9mm? I use the same base plate on my 550 for both 40 and 9mm. I realize I will need to get the small case feed plate for 9 but then I could use it for 40 also. Once it is changed, I do not plan on ever changing back to 45acp. I don't shoot that much 45 and the 550 can handle those duties.

Unlike the RL550, on the 1050 machine, 9mm and 40 S&W use different shellplates. 9mm will also require the small pistol case feed plate.

Are the conversion kits the same for the RL1050 and newer Super 1050? Once I buy the 40 cal conversion and small primer conversion, can it just change my 45 dies that are on the press and install the 40 dies I have (both set of dies are Dillon) on the tool head? I assume the powder drop and powder check will be the same (with some adjustments and tuning).

You can use the large pistol case feed plate for 40 and 9. I only use the large plate now since I don't load anything smaller than 9 and it works great for that. As good as the small plate did.

Yeah you can remove your 45 dies and put your 40 dies in that toolhead.

You are going to need one more toolhead unless you're happy pulling dies in and out to change cals.

If you don't have the small primer setup you'll have to buy that too.

Then you need the case feed parts and the shell plates for 40 and 9.
