ashman627
I have heard of a 'shok-buff" method to disable my 1911 grip safety .Anyone know how?
Stage 3
cut a small u shaped section from a shok buff and trap it between the main spring housing and the grip safety. This method has worked for me for years.
Aircooled6racer
Hello: Or you drill a hole for a pin in the mainspring housing and let it keep the grip safety depressed that way. Thanks, Eric
Steve RA
Or just cut the arm off, if it makes any difference to you to maintain the original appearance.
Distant Thunder
Or just cut the arm off, if it makes any difference to you to maintain the original appearance. Well, I suppose cutting off an arm is one way to prevent an accidental discharge.
Butterpuc
Unless you just want the grip safety pinned down so you won't feel it move as you are gripping the pistol.... Cut off the arm or file enough off that it doesn't make enough contact. Either way it will not work anymore.
Bamboo
I've cut small triangular pieces of shockbuff material and jammed them between the grip safety and mainspring housing. My .45 has been like this for 25 years. Pinning or welding a blob on the grip safety and filing to fit with the mainspring housing is nicer, but the cut shockbuff works fine, too. Thanks, Eric This is what I did. Takes 2 minutes but you need a drill press.

darkvibe
Don't need a drill press "Need" is a funny word like that. If you want to drill into the MSH and keep the hole between the spring hole and edge without one, feel free.

Bob DuBois
Pin mine, cheap easy to do with a drill press and you haven't trashed a fitted part. May come a time you want to sell that pistol, pin is easily removed and the safety works again. Want to try IDPA, it got to work and you have cut the grip safety then it's weld it up time. Now drill press try the shock buff trick, you have only trashed a cheap part.
ltdmstr
I drill a hole in the ms housing and insert a hammer strut pin which is about perfect size. Unlike cutting off the arm of the grip safety this can easily be reversed.
Aircooled6racer
Hello: I use a 1911 ejector split pin that I cut down some. That reminds me I need to do that to my 1911 9mm single stack still. Thanks, Eric

Biloxi23
1/16" drill bit to drill the hole(no drill press, just a vice) at slow speed. I use a paneling nail for a pin, and cut it off to fit. I have done six or so for myself and a couple for friends.

RJH
Darkvibe, I have done several, it is not that hard, but to each his own.
bountyhunter
The five second way: just bend the leaf on the sear spring so it doesn't push on the grip safety's arm. Then gravity or the slightest touch pushes it in so the safety is never engaged.
bountyhunter
I've cut small triangular pieces of shockbuff material and jammed them between the grip safety and mainspring housing. I would be wondering where that loose piece was at the worst possible moment.
ltdmstr
The five second way: just bend the leaf on the sear spring so it doesn't push on the grip safety's arm. Then gravity or the slightest touch pushes it in so the safety is never engaged. This doesn't work for everyone. With this method it's not uncommon for some people to grip the gun and activate the safety inadvertently. Pinning is foolproof and if done properly is easily reversed with minimal effort. S&W686
This is what I did to my Limited gun and it has worked great so far. Edited February 22, 2016 by S&W686
EclipseDS
This is what I did to my Limited gun and it has worked great so far. Thanks. This looks clever and will lock the grip safety in place, eliminating any play. And is completely reversible and no parts harmed in the process.
