Nimitz
I've recently come into possession of 600 rds of 9mm major ammo that I was thinking about trying out with my Steelmaster ... What would I need to do to it to be able to shoot 9mm major out of it?
echotango
8# spring and you should be good to go.
Hi-Power Jack
2 thoughts: 1. 9-10 lb spring 2. how certain are you of the quality of the ammo you just "came into possession".
caz41
That gun is set up to run minor or close to PF rounds for steel challenge. Prob at least at least a stronger spring. I second the above comment about how you came about this ammo and how certain you are of it being loaded to whatever velocity
danjordan78
Just called Dawson. They said it's not recommended, but if you were going to, put in a full length guide rod and heavier springs. I'm going to try 8-10 lb and see what tunes in good for the load I work up.
Hi-Power Jack
You'll have to resight the gun, also. Good luck with it. I'd take it slow, and watch for any problems after every few rounds.
Aircooled6racer
Hello: A 9lb ISMI recoil spring with major ammo in the 170-173PF range. A EGW full length guide rod for an STI and a EGW reverse plug as well. Your zero will be pretty close at 18 yards. Thanks, Eric
danjordan78
Will the plug that comes with the steelmaster work with a standard length guide rod or do I need to go with a full length and a new plug?
Nimitz
hmmmm .... sounds like more effort than I'm interested in expending ...
echotango
Same plug.
Aircooled6racer
Hello: The STI recoilmaster reverse plug is actually a little larger on the bore. The guide rod will flop around with a standard guide rod a little. Thanks, Eric
FullMetalJacket
I added the Dawson guide rod to mine and have been shooting major 9 out of it with no ill effects as of yet. I'm using a 10lb Wolff spring. Probably going 9. Gun runs like a dream on minor ammo with a 7lb Spring.
hoserdude
If I didn't load it, I wouldn't shoot it. unless you got it from someone you know that has good reloading skills.
OpenLife
I have 45K rounds through my SteelMaster. Only 5k were major. I tried many major loads; all were not fun to shoot out of the gun. Hard to grip, hard to track and/or terrible groups. I missed minimum PF twice at major competitions. The pistol runs like a dream using minor power factor 130 to 140 seven pounds spring. Edited December 26, 2015 by DissidentArms
