SAFuchs
Issue: Raw aluminum lower, formally an 80 %er. Which coating would stand up best or does it matter? Thoughts? Concerns? General discussion? Thanks for your impending wisdom!
BlueSpaderInfantryman
I would definitely anodize it and then Cerakote it later if you want.
TonytheTiger
Spray paint! I've seen it done...
Dan Sierpina
Anodize will probably take more abuse, and to Cerracoat over it won't last. I've seen it done, and it turned me off on Cerracoat, till I've seen some done properly. Cerracoat does give a lot of options as far as colors and patterns. rust4brains
You need to anodize first because the Cerakote needs it for good adhesion.
Dan Sierpina
You can Cerakote over anodize, but, it must be blasted for adhesion, not the other way around. This is according to Cerakote's application instructions.
SAFuchs
Thought anodizing would be the best first step, Now to find a place, Dan, do you know of any in the area?
Dan Sierpina
Not that I can think of. Most places have minimum lot charges, whether it's one piece or 50. The other thing it's from an 80% lower, with no serial # on it.
SAFuchs
There is a place in Braintree and one in Lowell, Web search. I'll see what they say.
BlueSpaderInfantryman
You can also get a kit and do it yourself; they are fairly easy. Without a serial number many places may not accept it.
SAFuchs
Brownells I presume
SAFuchs
And a host of other places.
BlueSpaderInfantryman
There are a few different kits out there; lots of them for sale all over the internet. Only thing with doing it yourself is that you are probably not going to get it all the way to level III Mil-Spec hardness (probably going to fall in at II or in between II and III). Best bet would be to find an engraver, and have your own made up serial number engraved on it; this will allow you to have it done at a shop and is still technically "off the books" as an 80% lower. Edit: I can't remember, but I believe you may also have to engrave a pseudo business name with city/state as well. I would use my initials for the Company name and then just my city/state, with Serial below: SCG Phoenix, AZ SCG123 Edited November 13, 2015 by BlueSpaderInfantryman
SAFuchs
Have the place in Lowell Doing it T & T, Hard anodizing that is, Will let you know the result.
SAFuchs
Both frames done and picked up. Look nice, not your average "Flat black" more of a greenish on one. Fits to the color I like.
