Red Dots and Astigamatisms

Hey, gang. I'm wondering if any of you Open class shooters, and soon to be Carry Optic shooters, suffer from astigmatisms, and how it affects your eye perception of the red dot. I recently purchased a red dot to potentially use in future CO matches, but the red dot comes out slightly extended around the core of the dot. I'm not really sure how to better explain it. I see more of an amorphous star instead of a clear and perfect dot/circle.

Anyone else have to deal with this? And any ways to better deal with it?

I have a pretty severe astigmatism, I put the blob on the target and pull the trigger, it works pretty well. I have heard in my area that there is an eye doctor that is also a shooter, I've debated fine tuning my eye wear, but I don't feel significantly limited.

massive astigmatism here too. yeah my dot is not crystal clear but it doesn't need to be. even 20 yard partials are not a problem with a slightly fuzzy dot. you are basically looking at the target and perceiving the dot as it comes into the right part of the target.

I'm nor sure how bad your particularly astigmatism is. mine is nigh impossible to correct with glasses. some options to consider are laser/lasik apparently they can do more with it these days. or gas permeable contacts or other contacts. talk to a few eye specialists.

Same here. Your focus should be on the target so that is clear. Even without astigmatism, the dot will be a little blurry.

I'll be damned. I've always loved shooting optics and have enjoyed the hell out of shooting open for quite a while now. Astigmatism, Cross-eye dominate here also, but never put it together that my condition may be why I prefer optics.

And I thought all optics had irregular dots... you mean to normal eye sight people the dot is round and clear????

I am hoping come Saturday to have a slide mounted red dot on my limited/sorta open and it helps me out. then I will start my open build while shooting the slide ride to get used to a dot. I will post my experience for those interested on Saturday after some dry fire.

So I took some time to look through my optic last night in varying the dot's intensity, indoor and outdoor lighting conditions, etc. Interestingly, I found that when I focused on my object, the dot would tighten up slightly. When I went to focusing my eyes on the dot itself, squinting and otherwise trying to adjust my eyes, it bled more than focusing past the dot. That's a good thing. But don't get me wrong - it's still blurry.

I was about to send my red dot back because the dot was not circular and was slightly smeared. Then I took a picture of the dot with my phone to send to the manufacturer, and the dot in the picture looked perfect. That's when I discovered it was my eyes.

I've been shooting SS for about 4 years, due to astigmatism I was seeing an enlongated front site. Plus at 60+ it was fuzzy. One eye Dr. had me in a contact, right eye only, with a 1.25 reader lens for close up. Cleared things up nicely but tended to give me a headache if worn all day. Now I just wear a contact to correct the astigmatism, front sight is a little fuzzy but I can live with it. My boys are suggesting I go to open, thinking about it.
