Never ending health problems

I hate that my body is sabotaging me. It can't JUST be Crohn's disease....... My hip joints are disintegrating and both need to be replaced (one immediately, the other soon. I can't walk without massive anti-inflammatories and pain killers). Carpal tunnel in both wrists. One herniated disc and two bulged in my lower back, which falls apart randomly and puts me in the ER. Severe hearing loss in both ears. On a good day, I only throw up once or twice from the Crohn's inflammation. Broke a wisdom tooth, but can't afford to have it pulled, so now it is infected. Constant muscle spasms in my legs from nutritional deficiencies due to digestive problems.

Someone once told me it could be worse, I could get sick and die. I can tell you for a fact, it is way worse to get sick and NOT die. At least there is a finality to death, rather than going to bed every night knowing you will be just as miserable tomorrow. I have had to cancel my last two major matches, and will not be going to any more this year. My mind still wants to go and compete, but my body will not comply. :( :( :(

One of the top guns at the Single Stack this year was recovering from two replacement hips, so that surgery is certainly not the end of the shooting game. There's probably a couple of months of good shooting weather ahead but I agree that taking a break from the physical activity for the remainder of the season may give your body time to heal.

Have you spoken to a specialist about a nutritional diet that won't aggravate the Crohn's ? If there is a fix (or even a small improvement) in how your body processes food then it could have a beneficial effect on the other problems too.

Perhaps a moderator can move this topic to another part of the forum so it won't get closed if it turns into a discussion.

Bummer, that really sucks. My mom has always had a lot of similar self sabotaging problems so I've seen what it's like when a person simply can't function well enough to get through the day, and no day is without terrible pain. If you don't mind me asking, where there any particularly destructive hobbies or vocations you participated in earlier in life? Mostly in regard to your joint issues that is.

Some of what you say is cause for concern, brother. I think you need to speak to someone who can help you through this. Thinking of the finality of death instead of being miserable needs to be worked out. I'm glad you posted this. Each day brings new hope. My prayers are with you for good health.

Easier said than done Tom, but hang in there. I've had a few relatives who've had their hips replaced and it worked very well for them. As for Crohn's, that one is tough, but manageable. Stay strong and begin tackling each issue, I pray you get relief and an improved disposition. Keep us posted and maybe our support will provide a little solace and encouragement.

--The dental infection alone could do you in. Have that extraction ASAP, regardless of cost. Dental infections are frequently the cause of a lot of other problems.

--Having hips replaced is the least of your worries. They are now routine procedures and recovery is quick for most people. The resulting pain relief will astound you.

--Get the Crohn's treated as soon as you can. There are medications out there now that are targeted at that condition. Get your nutritional regimen back in balance.

I had a similar post awhile back. I feel your pain. All I can say is good luck in getting things figured out. Ask around or go online to find the best Docs in your area. Nothing sucks more than not even wanting to get out of bed in the morning.

My wife has had Crohn's disease since she was 20 (53 year now).

Terrible, complicated disease.

She lost a kidney and her teeth due to nutritional deficiencies caused

by the disease/surgery for the disease.

Take large doses of Every Vitamin and Mineral you can find at the

pharmacy.

You will be deficient in Everything. Vit B12 will cause Alzheimer's symptoms

if you become slowly enough deficient in it. You need Vit D and B6 to make

the calcium go to the right places (teeth and bones) instead of going into

kidney stones.

Doctors will be happy to operate on one thing after the other, without ever

recommending massive nutritional supplements that are necessary to

prevent future surgeries.

Good luck with it.

I have been seeing counselors and shrinks. 3 different kinds of anti-depressants. Neither can fix the underlying issue. Which is that my body being broken is not state-of-mind issue or a perspective issue. Each day doesn't bring new hope when you know that tomorrow and next week and next month will bring the same pain and brokenness as today. I don't really understand why people think it is so important to make sure that my ability to endure this is worked on, when the actual health issues are continuing to get worse. If you get cancer and the Doc tells you that you have 6 months to live, every acts like you are a hero and then you are gone and remembered fondly. What if you have cancer level pain that doesn't get better OR end? Then everyone else says you need to tough it out, "for your kids/ family/ friends/ whoever". Why, exactly? The whole guilt trip that my kids won't live a good life if their dad is gone is B.S. Plenty of people have lost loved ones to health issues and gone on to live a normal life. If we as a culture are totally cool with dismembering an unborn baby because the mom doesn't want him to live, why are we so pre-occupied with forcing a grownup to live when his own body is TRYING to die? In any other era of history I would have succumbed to my disease naturally about 10-15 years ago. But now that the medical technology has progressed to the point where we can keep defeating my bodies attempt at self-destruction, it is my moral responsibility to stay alive as long as possible? Doesn't really make sense.

+1, not sure how close you are, but the Oregon school of Dentistry is in Portland (503)-494-8867. Most dental schools have an emergency clinic that will help you for a very reduced cost or free. Even if you are to far away, call and ask if they know of a free Dental clinic in your area. Many states have them and they usually have a retired Dentist with Dental students that rotate through the state.

If the tissue around the tooth feels swollen (infected) go the Emergency Room and get an antibiotic, your medical insurance should help cover this. Be sure to tell them of your intestinal and other health history, some antibiotics can be hard on the good intestinal bacteria like erythromycin.

I wish you well.

Crohn's disease, by itself is bad enough. A guy at work had it and it had completely taken over his life.

Luckily for him, Humera (I believe it was that) was prescribed and helped.

It completely changed his outlook on life and capability to live with it.

He gives himself the shots and it is completely under control at the present time.

I truly hope they find something that will work for you. Good luck.

Tom, I'm sure you've heard all the advice in the world so I won't try to give you any.

But I'll tell you this, you build good guns, and you made a difference to me because I now actually enjoy shooting shotgun. The gun you built me has had ZERO failures this entire season. You owe me nothing but I owe a lot of fun I've had with it, so know that there people across the country that give a shit weather you are a live or not. You make a difference to the shooting sports and from I sit that matters.
