Safe to load .38 Super to major in Colt?

I want to load some .38 Super to major PF. The pistol is a late 2013 Colt Government. Is it safe to do so in this pistol? Thinking about using a 160 gr. coated bullet. Powders on my bench: VV N330, 340.

Thank you,

The answer is: maybe. I've run my 115 grain IPSC loads through my Colt barrel. With the right gunpowder and brass (Starline +P or Starline Super Comp), it is possible if you have enough case support.

People did it in the old days with heavy bullets before there were fully supported chambers. They used slow burning gunpowder.

Your powders are a little fast burning for the job. Use N340 since it is slower and will help to keep pressure lowest. However, you'd be better served with a much slower gunpowder.

Work up slowly and watch for excess bulging in the unsupported region. If you see excess bulging, stop. You've passed the safe limit.
