Sarge
Now that I have everyone's attention, Where do I get a grow light? We bought some spring flowers but now it's supposed to be in the 20's overnight for awhile. I want to keep them in the garage for a week at least with a heater on. Do I even need a light? Will anything else work? I really don't know Jack about flowers............or pot.
Maximis228
You can always use a UVB bulb for lizards. Get a full spectrum one. If you need a longer tube bulb, use a salt water fish tank UVB bulb. Same thing, just a lot bigger. These bulbs aren't cheap. Could run anywhere from $25-$100 per bulb depending on brand and size. You can pick them up at petsmart, petco, walmart, and locally owned pet stores.

JimmyZip
Funny stuff there. During the economic downturn, I was approached to do lighting and ventilation for some folks that grow for the dispensaries here in CA. Did some of my best work for those folks. The set up was appreciated very much and is copied by many as a fairly simple example of indoor grow set ups. I wouldn't know, but these folks were very particular about soil being the most important component and despised those who used chemicals. The whole organic movement has made its way into the marijuana horticulture movement. I think they will be okay with a week under a typical grow tube you would find at your local hardware store. Sarge
I know some are saying they will be fine but the nursery said they needed to get sun every day if possible? Too many to drag in and out plus it is only hitting in the 40's for the next several days.

Teased us with 70 degrees ONE DAY last week now it's going to be record cold this weekend.
motosapiens
We got growlights from amazon. We start our pepper seedlings (and basil) indoors under the lights. If I only had to move something inside for a day or two, I wouldn't sweat it. We have a couple of these for the peppers: http://www.amazon.com/EnviroGro-FLT24-4-Tube-Fixture-Included/dp/B002JQBQZQ/ref=sr_1_28?ie=UTF8&qid=1427514161&sr=8-28 FWIW, I wouldn't have figured you for a flower guy, not that there is anything wrong with that. I don't grow any plants I can't eat. We have already harvested some radishes and green onions in the last day or so. Swanny10
I guess if they are ultra sensitive then they can't be in the garage that long. But as your salesman said. Sun everyday IF POSSIBLE. Somehow I doubt, or at least hope not, that a nursery in Ohio would sell you plants that can't handle environmental swings once in a while. Will they droop a bit without natural sunlight for a week? Yep. Will they die if they get frozen? Quite possibly. Will they survive and make a comeback after a week in a heated garage? I'd put money on it. Swanny10
I guess the real question is how much did you spend on the flowers? Are they annuals or perrenials? Do you have a huge emotional investment in the flowers? When you farm and the weather decides to f$&@ you, sometimes the best financial choice is to replant. They make grow light bulbs of various light wavelengths that fit standard dual fluorescent 48" (shop light) fixtures. Some people would "mix" the bulbs: one grow bulb and one standard white tube per fixture. Guess how I know that. http://www.bulbs.com/eSpec.aspx?ID=11107&Ref=Plant+Grow http://www.ebay.com/itm/4FT-T5-HO-Grow-Light-2x-6500K-48-Hydroponic-Fluorescent-Bulb-Veg-Bloom-Lamp-Kit-/191316586363?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c8b5b6f7b Edited March 28, 2015 by bountyhunter
whitedog
Not that I would know such things......but an aquarium light does wonders for our plant friends. Also a reptile light. The aquarium lights are normally a higher wattage. Depending on how many plants you have, will depend how high you mount the light. If you turn off the light in the garage, and all plants are in the "halo" of light you should be good to go. At least that's what I heard.
Sarge
They are colder temp tolerant flowers for sure. Perennials. Flox is what we got most of. Around here you have to keep calling the nurseries this time of year and get them when the truck comes in or else they are gone the first week or so. It was 60 degrees and 40 at night when we got them but it is supposed to only be in the 20's the next several nights. I realize at some point we just need to bite the bullet and get them in but I would like to make it through this period of extreme cold nights to at least give them a chance. I'm not a flower guy or a garden guy for that matter. But my far better half is, so by default I do all the tilling, digging and planting. We are going to just drag them out for a few more days for some sun and bring them in at night and see if the temps moderate a little. Personally I hope it stays this way all summer. It's been 10-15 below average all winter and into the spring but why do I have this nagging feeling it's going to be hotter than heck this summer? fishsticks
Here on the wet side of the PNW if you want to get a jump on a summer garden you start summer veggies from seed inside. Back when I had room for a garden I started them under a plain old 2 bulb 4' fluorescent fixture. It isn't as good as a full spectrum bulb, and seedlings tend to get spindley. But for a couple weeks it would likely be fine.
JimmyZip
Most radical set up I ever did was a guy who lives out in the sticks and grows indoor peppers. All kinds of exotic super-hot peppers with cool names and super scoville units of heat! No kidding, peppers! Sends out for little pepper plants all over the world and is just a genius with indoor growing using two-tier lighting and trays. Some people with more money than they know what to do with, go crazy and grow indoor peppers out in the middle of nowhere. Looks like a biker compound with pit bulls and shipping containers etc. Major indoor pepper operation. That dude is sober and straight as an arrow, but man does he take his peppers seriously! Lol!
