davsco
just got a 1911 STI with a basic post front sight. has anyone monkeyed around with drilling one of these to accommodate a fiber optic rod? and maybe open up the top a little to allow more light? tips or tricks or lessons learned? I guess it can't hurt to try as I'd be buying a new fiber optic front anyways. thanks, david
Toolguy
Hi David. I make fiber optic sights for revolvers. My fronts are .750 long. I drill the hole .045 down from the top, centered side to side. This is for a 1mm F/O rod. I use a 1.15 diameter drill which is a little oversize as the fibers are not a consistent diameter. A #57 drill or 3/64" drill will work if that is what you have. Then I mill a 1/2" slot across the middle, leaving 1/8" on each end, making it .070 deep, just enough to clear the fiber on the bottom. You need to use cutting oil so the drill doesn't bind up in the hole and preferably drill from both ends so you're not going so deep.
