Iron sights for flat top AR

Bronco

Recommended Posts

Due to USPSA not having a tactical class for scoped rifle I need to add iron sights to my flat top for local matches.  I am open to suggestions as to type ie; flip up, A-2 handle.  I'm leaning toward the A-2 with a cross hair front sight, any one tried this.  Thanks for any help!

JP Enterprises makes an adapter that goes over the barrel and clamps behind the muzzle to provide a sight mounting block that will allow anything from a full on target sight with inserts, to a standard post with “ears”.

Here is link to OK Weber, where you can see some more full on target type front and rear sight systems.

Any decent rear aperture type sight, coupled with a globe style front sight will shoot one moa (or better) if the rifle can, and is still a pretty good setup for the fast stuff.

I just got the detachable A2 type rear sight that goes on a flat top and the JP globe front sight for my convertible upper.

Check with John Paul at JP Enterprises. He has more options available than are shown on his web page and is probably your best one stop shop.

Todd Salmon tried the cross hair front sight at last year's MM3G and did not seem too fond of it.  I think he's gone back to a post front.  I like a skinny post (.040 - .050)  Bennie Cooley shoots a REALLY skinny post (.035 I think).   An apeture front sight would be ideal if you were shooting plates or bullseye alone but the consensus seems to favor the post front for all-around shooting.  But give the crosshair a try and see what you think.

As for rear sights, get a same plane apeture.  1/2 MOA adjustments are nice but not necessary.   The DPMS detachable rear sight is pretty trick but has very limited adjustment (10 MOA I think) so I prefer a standard deatchable A2 handle with the full range of adjustment.

Kelly is right, the detachable handle with the A2 rear sight is the real way to go for the rear.

The one from Fulton Armory is $100

The DPMS one is $88 from Midway

They both need to have the rear aperture replaced with a same plane aperture as Kelly suggested which will cure zero differences between the small and large apertures. Ashley Outdoors has the trick replacement aperture for $30.

The DPMS detachable rear sight does only have about 10 MOA of adjustement (I get 11 clicks total on mine). I have to use it because a full handle assembly won't fit on the modified rail I have on my convertible upper.

For the front sight system, I went with both the JP globe aperture with changeable inserts, and an A2 style detachable front sight with a .040 post (also from JP) so I could have the best of both worlds. I have not decided which is best for me yet, but at least I have both options.

Happy New Year,

Thanks again for the help with this I placed my order for a DPMS detachable carry handle, M&A removable  front sight base and a natl. match front sight pin.  With shipping it only came to about $120 from Brownells.  Have a friend that will let me try the crosshair front sight to see if I like it.
