soundlzrd
Last year I got a 550 B to replace a Lee Classic turret that I never really got to run well. The 550 is running great though. However, as I step into rifle cartages, I am looking for an economical way to resize and deprime. Many people use a second toolhead to resize and trim with a rt1200/1500 but I do not see a way to justify that much money. Also depriming on the 550 is spitting primers all over the floor. I know I can fix this, just have to read up on how. Also tool heads add up, so I was thinking about selling the unloved turret and getting a single stage. I am hesitant to get another lee press after my initial experience, but not sure what is gained from spending more on another brand. What say the smart people here that recommended the 550 to me. Thanks Sean
blairmckenzie1
RCBS Rock Chucker- $140ish plus shell holders or 550 toolhead and primer catch fix- $ 23 toolhead & $30 Primer fix (that you should already have) & $45 conversion= $100. I would stick with your 550, it would be just as fast if not faster and cheaper than getting into another press. RCBS makes a quality single stage for a reasonable price, I wouldn't get a Lee. I grabbed quick prices from Midway and Dillon so if they are a bit off sorry
soundlzrd
What is this $30 primer catch fix you mention? Being I wet tumble I had not don't much with the depriming part of the 550 until today.

It's a kit to remove the small primer catcher box off the press and have a hose drop primers in a bottle under a press on the floor. Graham Smith
If you didn't keep the turret and just want to deprime, not resize and deprime, then a cheap Lee single stage will do. But a decent single stage isn't that much and can be handy to have. The Lee Challenger or RCBS are the economy choices.
jmorris
Take the auto index stuff off the turret and it will be OK. That said no press is going to be as cheap as a new toolhead for the 550. If you want I'll send you a brand new 550 tool head for your Lee turret and your problem will be solved.
soundlzrd
The 550 cost isn't just about the tool head. You also need to conversion. I load for my DE 50ae, but not at a level I can justify the conversion for the 550, another place the single stage would be useful. Sure I can, and have, loaded that on the turret, but I do everything one stage at a time there. Other thing is the turret is I bought it as a kit. I am sure all that stuff should be valuable to someone else. Using the press as a single stage, all that is just taking up space.
