Mr. Bullet on a Hornady LnL?

Recommended Posts

Now that I have dedicated presses setup, I am thinking about adding a bullet feeder to my LnL that is setup for 9mm since we shoot a metric ton of it over the course of a season.

Has anyone setup a MBF with a LnL or should I just stick w the Hornady feeder?

I use the hornady bullet feeder and don't see the point of spending more for the MBF. I give it a 10 out of 10 for 9mm and a 9 out of 10 for .40. It sometimes drops the bullets nose down for me on .40. I'm sure I could keep tinkering with it but it is so seldom I don't care. It may have something to do with the xtreme 220 grain bullets I am using.

Since your only doing 9mm, I would just buy the LNL version.

I made it work. I made a custom bracket to hang the collator from the cabinets above my bench as I don't use a case feeder. It is easy for me to grab a handful of cases and feed them into the press without slowing down, but when I was hand-feeding cases and bullets I had to let go of the handle and the bullets were harder for me to handle quickly. I use hornady's PTX die and the setup works flawlessly. I went from an average of 300-400 rounds per hour to 700-800 easy (loading 1000/HR is do-able but mistakes can happen when going that fast)...and that is loading 9-major with 10.5 grains of AA#7. The LNL is GREAT for filling a case to the brim with powder and not spilling a single grain. I have also managed to get it setup so I can run about 8 different bullets (from 115 JHPs to 160RN) through the feeder without any adjustments and will not get a single flipped bullet or "multi-bullet feed".

I talked to Rick at Mr Bulletfeeder about the expander. The kit comes with a PTX-style die but it is made for a Dillon powder measure. He informed me that he did make a few expanders for Hornady powder measures but they were machined from mild steel instead of the usual hard steel. I thought about buying one of those from him but the Hornady PTX die works so well I didn't think it was needed.

I have never used or seen a Hornady bullet feeder in operation, but I can tell you that the Mr Bulletfeeder is hands down the single best investment I have made in reloading equipment. If it weren't for adding the bullet feeder, I probably would have broken down and bought a Dillon 1050 by now, but the LNL works so well for me that I haven't been able to talk myself into spending the money to upgrade.

Bringing this back from the dead. Found it researching bullet feeders.

I also load on a LNL AP. I found this link with pics of mounting a Mr bullet feeder on a LNL. http://triggermeister.com/mr-bulletfeeder-on-a-hornady-lnl/

Anyone else had luck with a Hornady PTX using a Mr bullet feeder die? I'm currently using a PTX. Wondering if I can just stick with that in the powder drop.

I load coated bullets and this feeder seems like the way to go for that if I can get it working on my press.

Not to offend anyone, but I STRONGLY disagree, these two products are from totally different leagues. I could not sell my Hornady fast enough.

For one thing the hornady collator relies on bullets eventually getting lucky and landing the right way in the slots. Anything else it kicks back to the bowl. That drastically limits its speed potential. The mbf will of course feed a bullet that's landed correctky but if ones upside down it'll flip it and feed that too. Much better collator and much faster.

I use the Hornady PTX die with my MBF. I called Rick when I first got the feeder to ask him about the expanders. He said he did design one for the Hornady powder measure and would swap me for the Dillon part that comes with the feeder. Only downside being they were made as prototypes and were not hardened like the dillons. I thought about it, but the PTX expands the cases in the EXACT same shape as the MBF. The only thing that absolutely does NOT work is the powderfunnel.com expander. It flares the mouth at a 45 degree angle and the bullets will not stay upright.

If anyone is wondering... the Hornady PTX works fine with the MBF. The optional extensions for the bullet drop tube allow you to mount the MBF on the Hornady case feeder. The coiled wire to the switch on the die is too short to reach the die without a lot of tension so you'll he to extend that with some wires and spade connectors.

The only modification necessary was to cut the top of the stem in the sizing die off so the powder measure can sit above it. At least with the Hornady sizing die. The stem sticks up about 2 inches and I had to cut it about 1.5 inches shorter.
