Broke my 650 indexing ring (how do I get it out to replace?)

Recommended Posts

De-priming a large batch of .40's and snapped the indexing ring it appears,

I have a spare parts kit, but I have never taken this thing apart to this degree, how do I access it? I haven't been able to find any diagrams or videos detailing how to change this part out.

Also, do I need some sort of indexing gauge to then make sure the press is indexing perfectly? I was told I might need to do this...

Is there any sort of tutorial out there detailing the replacing of the index ring?

Thanks in advance,

You are in for some work! The entire platform has to come off the ram. Pull shell plate bolt(don't forget to loosen set screw on your shaft) Pull shell plate Pull primer assy Pull platform At this point you will see what needs done.

There is no video for this that I can find.

I have done more than I care to remember. It is easy enough, except for re-installing the spring which is a fiddly job. Dillon should have sent you the platform alignment tool along with the replacement index ring (or will if you call/email them), though I confess I don't find it very useful... I just eyeball the primer punch alignment and call it good.

In the future, keep the cam surfaces well lubed (I use vaseline), and stop if you hit any resistance.... babying the indexing system really helps minimize breakages.

I believe I broke the indexing system due to some of the .40 cases not ejecting properly out of station 5. The brass I was depriming was semi dirty and would hang up in the shellplate upon ejection, requiring me to either wiggle the arm up/down slightly or to put a finger on top of the case mouth to align it upright and then it would pop out. not sure if that is common or not, but I am 99% sure that was what caused the indexing ring to snap

Just fixed it myself within about 15 minutes! Easier than I thought it would be.

However, how do I know if it is indexing "perfectly"? I do not have the indexing tool from Dillon, it was not in my spare parts kit,

Eyeballing it, everything seems pretty good, but how/where do I even adjust it if it weren't perfect? What part do I need to set in order to get the indexing just right,
