krazykj03
I was wondering for a beginner what would you guys load for this combo and in a limited sti. Only info i got was from hodgdon, but i know you guys are more experienced and would like to know what your setup for reloading and also what is your OAL. the load data says 1.125" and 4.2-4.7 grs. and i would read others have 1.160-1.180. I was wondering why do people run them long compared to short?
shakman
On some guns like the STI/SVI, the dimension from where the chamber stops and the rifling starts is a bit longer. People load them longer so close that distance so the bullet engages the barrel rifling sooner for better accuracy. Setting the bullet "tall" also reduces the pressure inside the case and gives slower muzzle velocity as a result. I know on my STI, I can set the bullets at around 1.16 COAL and the rounds will still fit/feed properly. If I try to use those same rounds in my M&P, they won't chamber. The KKM barrel in my M&P is pretty much set at slightly larger than 1.125 COAL.
twodownzero
My STI will chamber ammunition that it cant eject--around 1.3. Therefore, I load about 1.2, which is nice and long where they feed nicely and fit in the magazine. I don't have any other .40s so the fact that they wouldn't fit in a Glock or whatever doesn't bother me.

Sandbagger123
your barrel and magazine will determine how long you can load to.what length your barrel can take is usually known by doing the plunk test. i would say most people load for .40 2011 with 1.18 to 1,20. both should work fine in a regular 2011. i just run mine at 1.18 with plated and coated. i have used bear creeks in the past and 4.4 to 4.5 of TG should get you PF with ease. i have found BC coating make the bullets run about 10% faster than plated. if it was not for the residue on fingers after loading i would still use them. noylj
>wondering why do people run them long compared to short? Why would any one run them short when long is generally more accurate and is less likely to KB if the bullet is set back a little? I have found that TightGroup in my .40s will produce pressure spikes and can increase smoke. No matter how many loads you hear about, you always start with the starting load and work up. Loaded Bayou 180gr from 3.1gr (136 PF) to 4.7gr (180 PF), but didn't like ANY of them.
fltbed
TiteGroup is one of the powders Bear Creek (and other black bullet manufactures) does not recommend using due to the high flame temps TG produces. You end up with more smoke and fouling. I use WST or WSF with Bear Creeks but others have had good luck with Solo 1K, N320, 4756, Universal, Unique, and the list goes on & on.
