S&W 929 Load Data

I'm new to reloading for revolvers, can you use long OAL for 9mm? like out to 1.20 or so

929 headspaces on moonclip. You can load them as long as you like. Just realize if you get far enough out, there might not be enough bullet inside the brass to hold it, so the bullet will slip out under recoil and the OAL gets longer and you loose velocity.

I've been trying to work up some loads for my new 929PC. Seems that everything I've tried so far either doesn't make 125 power factor, or the cases stick in the cylinder. And, yes, my 929 also runs noticeably slower than my 5" semis (1911 & M&P).

In my testing, on average and almost with striking precision, my 929 is 50fps slower than my 5" autos.

The only powder I noticed a less precipitous drop off was clays.

Another observation with these guns.

The barrel is advertised as a true 9mm, a 355.

The cylinder holes however are 357, you can prove this to yourself of course by dropping a 357 bullet through and you will see they pass through easily. In my testing if I have two bullets of the same weight, but one is 356 and the other a 357, this is good for an easy +20 fps change.

If you shoot a 358 bullet which is going to swage on the way thorugh the cylinder, velocity went up +30 fps with no powder change. a 358 will not pass though my cylinder, it needs to be hammered through.

I am pretty sure its bad practice to do this though as it beats on the gun pretty hard I imagine, so not advised I don't think. But they do shoot and they are very accurate.

re: 929 loading..

I tried 3.4, 3.6, and 3.8 of Herco with X-treme Plated .357" - 147 gr RN bullets.. Average of 8 rounds.

I got avg of 107, 117, and 124 PF.. I figure the next thing I try will be 3.9 and 4.0.

Min and Max PF on the 3.8 was 121 and 127.. so the 3.9 or 4.0 will likely be about perfect.

I currently use 4.5 gr of Herco with the shorter barreled (5.5") and slightly longer cased 38 Super 627-4.. that gives me an avg PF of 134 PF with 129 Min and 142 Max.. average of 8 shots. I could probably go down to 4.3 but risk going minor PF on one or two rounds.. I get no sticky cases at all and it fills the case pretty well. I used Federal standard small pistol primers for both loads.

Kevinj308 how was the case extraction? What headstamp was the brass?

Lapua brass, got a good deal from Grafs and it's easy to tell what's mine.

Never had any extraction problems. I went through a couple hundred with mixed brass before I bought the Lapua, no problems at all.

ETA coal 1.100 inches. to the 125JHP zero's and 4.6 wsf. Ran it in a match last weekend, couldn't be happier.

Federal brass is what I settled on, but Speer brass also works fine for me.

The load I shot all last season was a .358 160g bayou @1.175 with 2.7 of tg for 805 fps.

I am slowly looking at another loads for this season based on clays, but I am still struggling with getting it to meter on very light drops. I have the xss powder bar but it still is having random drops that are .3 to .4 low and those are going over the chrono -50fps and would fail to make even 120pf. This is an icore load, so 120 is the bar...

I am told the arredondo bar fixes this, will be trying one out.

Add what brass too please.

Range brass, Starline, Winchester etc....

I fed my 929PC with Starline brass exclusively. New Starline brass for major sanctioned matches, used Starline for practice and local matches.

I tried range brass, but had issues with the moonclips - too tight, too loose.

I have been working up loads for my new 929. Here are a couple 8 shot strings I chrono'd recently using 135 gr 9mm Bayou at 1.140 OAL, mixed brass. 85 degrees in the Florida sunshine in December!

3.3 Gr Titegroup avg. 937.1 PF 126.5 and,

3.5 Gr Titegroup avg. 970.7 PF 131.

Will probably settle on 3.6 Gr - better to be safe than have a bad day at the chrono. Shoots nice and soft.
