Atlas , I greatly appreciate it.

I had to go through this place called hell to build it , and I really don't ever want to go back there again.

The Readers digest version of the evolution of it being made.

The compensator is mine but I could not fabricate it on my little mini mill.

I was turned down by a lot of gun smiths and machine shops that did not want to work on a one-off proto-type part , there is no money in it.

I finally found a guy with a small machine shop that was willing to take the project on when business was slow. I had to wait until December for one of his CNC machines to be available.

We spent 2 days entering all my numbers into a program , we made the first one out of aluminum to make sure everything was looking right , made a few small changes , and then made it out of 416 stainless.

I wish I could afford one of those $100,000 + dollar CNC machines he had at his shop,

It was cool to watch that thing make the compensator.

I was able to do all the slide lightening and everything else on the gun myself , with my mini mill.

And that's truly the readers digest version of the evolution of the comp being made. The whole story is worse.

But in the end I'm very happy with how the whole gun turned out , and I really do enjoy shooting the heck out of it.

Best Regards.

Wow, that's sounds like something I've done! I did the opposite though: I tried to find a gunsmith to fit a 2011 comp to my Tanfo, found one, he destroyed a barrel, then a comp, then a slide. I third it again with a local machinist who only destroyed a barrel.

I have since bought all the dies I need to do it myself...

Finally made some progress last night:

If that machinist of yours slows down again I'd be interested in another of those comps :)

Did you add the holes in the sides after testing it?

I am with you on things accidently getting destroyed by others, and we don't have an endless supply of parts available to us.

Like you, I try and do as much as I can myself. I wanted to also try and use that thundercomp , please let me know how it all comes out for you.

As for building my comp , unfortunately I was not afforded the time to try it without putting the side ports in , I only had one shot at it, so everything was done at one time.

I don't think the front side ports are big enough to really make much of a difference,

everything is pretty much leaving out the first port and the rest of the top of the comp.

These are my 2 unicorns. I just finished the SIII last week and ran great last Sundays match except for some mag issues. Got word today that my other Stock II has been cerakoted and hopefully will make it's way here beginning of next week!!!a5a4urev.jpg

great looking gun gennaro. :)

did it start life as a limited custom? or a gold custom/gold team? I'm just curious if you shot it as a V8 or V12 first then went to a more 'conventional' setup with no barrel ports and a more modern design compensator.

love the little touches like the custom mag button and the cut back dustcover and cut out spring tunnel like eric's gun. I want to do that on my V12 too. it just looks too cool.

A friend has some kind of limited edition eric custom which came from the factory with the dust cover cut right back to the scope holes like eric's (doesn't have the spring tunnel cut out though) and I have to say I can feel the difference in weight compared to my 'regular' eric custom V12.

Did you ever shoot it before cutting back the dust cover?

Looks like a stock 3 converted to SA!!!! Dude that looks awesome!

Thanks. It is. Originally was going to shoot .40 minor in production but another stock II making it's way here so turned the III into a Limited gun, think I'm gonna cerakote magwell black though, think it'll be a cooler color scheme

BeerBaron, Thanks I greatly appreciate it.

It started life as a Limited Custom. I also have a V12 top end and an original V8 barrel and comp that ended up cracking on me.

I have two barrels for this particular set up, one with barrel ports and one without the ports.

I also have two frames , the other is still at full length , but I prefer the frame that I cut back the duster cover on , it took some of the weight off the nose.

Here is a picture with the barrel that is ported.

Best Regards,

I was thinking of doing the same !

I think the Stock III makes a good Limited setup. The weight feels good, little polishing and work and the trigger can be made smooth and light, and it shot flat. Plus if I wanna go back to .40 minor in production then it's not that much work to do so. Plus I think it just looks sexy

Best Regards,

ok, you are absolutely the right person to talk to then!

I recently bought a eric custom V12 2010 after agonising over whether to buy a V8 or V12.

I've now shot it a bit and really like it, but I do wonder if perhaps the V8 is not a better package. or perhaps a V8 with short dustcover.

how do you rate the V8 vs V12? and also, how about your custom comp? how does it perform on the unported barrel vs the V8 barrel?

thanks again for sharing. the work you've done is super nice. :)

last question... the racker? is that the sidewinder from henning cut to fit the tanfoglio or did you get a gunsmith fit one and cut it?

thanks so much. :)

I had some extra parts laying around (Stoeger base pads, extra checkered walnut grips, a factory Limited magwell), and I've been waiting to acquire 50 posts so I could put them all up for sale in the Classifieds. But... I got tired of waiting and decided to buy a Limited Pro and install everything on that gun instead. Funny how that shit works, eh? :) I literally picked up the Limited Pro from my FFL after I got off work today and installed the grips (after I cut them down and stained them black), the magwell, and a new Dawson fiber optic front sight this evening so that I could take some porn pics just for this thread! :D

Here are my two Tanfoglios...

BeerBaron,

Everyone is different and we all have are own personal preferences of what feels right to us.

If you prefer a lighter gun than the V12 is the right choice for you. It is a great platform and will run beautifully, you will be very happy with how it works for you.

For me, I prefer a slightly longer and heavier gun, so I like the V8, and with me it did shoot a little flatter.

But there is no right and wrong here, the only way you will know what you personally favor is to shoot them side by side.

If you can still get the V8 over there , maybe think about picking it up, you can always sell it later on.

If I could I would buy that V8 from you in a heartbeat.

As for my comp and set-up on this gun, the ported barrel shoots much flatter than the non-ported one.

There is a trade off though, it is loud.

The slide racker is a sidewinder I bought from Shootersconnection, and then I machined it down on my mini mill to fit the slide.

On my V12 it has that extra hole in the top of the comp that goes into the barrel ,

( they probably should have called it a V13 )

Does yours have that extra hole in the top of the comp ?

Best Regards,

Hi gennaro, actually I do have the option to buy a V8 top end. it's brand new from the local distributor, cost is $1200 AUD (about $1150 USD). that's complete slide, barrel, comp etc.

I also have the option to buy a used eric custom V8 from someone at my club and was originally intending to buy both a V8 and V12, shoot them for a while and then either keep one as a backup, or sell it. But I was so pleased with the V12 I thought I may not bother to buy a second open gun just yet.

My V12 is fairly new so it doesn't have that hole. It seems they stopped doing the extra hole in the comp a couple of years ago. I'm not sure why as to me it seemed like a good idea. same with the side holes. When searching for my new gun I did come across a really old V8 (2003 model) that 2 holes in each side of the comp plus the extra hole in the middle/top of the comp. I'm not sure why they stopped doing that, but Eric did say on his gun the side holes didn't make much difference.

Thanks for the info. it's hard to find much about how the different model tanfoglio open guns operate. :)

BeerBaron,

It sounds like you've made the right choice going with the V12. It is a solid platform.

Your right I had a hard time getting information on these also.

And over here we are very limited on the choices we have in buying a Tanfoglio Open gun.

Maybe in the future there will be more options for us.

The Best of Luck
